Overheating or faulty thermostat

Post by corbanbrook »

The last couple days I have been notcing that as my car heats up the temp gauge slowly rises up and up passed the half way point and almost to the red then it quickly drops down to the halfway point again.

Now although this freaks me out each time it does it, logically, I assume that the gauge is malfunctioning because it would not be able to cool the car down that fast from almost overheating to normal operational temperatures in a matter of seconds.

Your thoughts?

does the fan kick on. If it doesn't it may be the coolant temp sensor over by your thermostat. Other than that yes it may be your thermostat.

i would say sticking thermostat, the temp can drop pretty quick when they open.

you might as well try it to rule it out if nothing else, they are really cheap and easy to replace.
