Altenator Problems

Post by xxjunior78xx »

hey guys, I keep busting belts on my mx3. Its all of a sudden to, within the last 3 weeks i have put on 5 belts. I have owned the car for almost a year and nothing untill recently. the guys at mazda cant figure out why? I put a new altenator and pulleys on and it still happens. they all line up ok and everything. The belt only lasts about 3 days then thats it! it doesnt squeel at first but after a day and a half it squeels like a bastard then snaps. is it cause its to tight, or not tight enought? they have tried everything! can anyone help me out?

Thanks

Could be a bearing seizing when hot.

You'd need to check what else is driven by that belt - water pump, power steering, air con - is there an idler pulley? I'd be checking anything else on that belt - maybe you can feel if all the bearings seem ok. Or else try and quickly check them when it snaps.

Doesn't seem likely it would be the alternator if you just changed it.

Check all pullys, Then install your belt just tight enough so you can turn the longest part of it sideways (up and down)
Run your car for 10 minutes.
Retighten your belt the same way.
MX3 4cyl belts are terrible, they have to be Tight Tight Tight
