just curious as to why the word COLONEL is pronounced KERNEL ? :?

Bet there is a reason but I don't know what it is!

I think most ranks derived from French, such as brigadier, captain, admiral and lieutenant. And why is lieutenant pronounced "lef-tennant" everywhere but the US?

my guess would be that it probably isn't supposed to be pronounced kernal!
