Engine noise...PLEASE HELP!

Ok, when I start up my car i hear almost like a ticking noise kinda thing. When it idels its the worst. When i shift into gear it quites down, but when i acclerate it gets worse again. Is something serious here? I use 87 gas, my mom said to try using 89 or 92 and it might fix it. I asked a friend and he said my Manifold was going! Please any help would be great (i use my hold button alot too, i use it to come up my drive way so my car dosnt down shift and loose wheel power, only in first though, my driv way is stone and steep) Please help, i dont want my MX-3 to die already (i just got it 2 months ago) PS: 1992 4-cyl. auto<P>THANKS!

I had this problem too. I took off the valve cover and poured "a little" motor oil over the valves. Just enough to get it covered. then put the valve cover back on and it ran normal again. And check to see if the hose that goes to the left of the air box is in place.
