Legal vs. Illegal in the US ???

Post by simo711 »

I was curious about the side marker lights. I heard that having clear marker lights with any color light other than yellow/white is illegal in the US? I have talked to some people and they say they aren't, or at least they haven't been pulled over for them yet? Let me know if you live in the US, preferable KY and tell me what you know about lights. They are probably the same as black-outs or driving with just your park lights on. It's illegal, but everybody does it so they don't make that much of an issue. If the cop is an a**hole and wants something to bust you on then they can. It just depends on if the cop got his coffee and doughnuts that morning! Image Image Image

That site that White Fish suggested (the same one that I suggested in another post) will have the answer. They are illegal unless they are white or yellow. That DOES NOT mean that you will be messed with if you do it though. We have green ones on our car and have never been pulled over for them (Yet). We have them hooked into the parking lights and turn signals. If I get pulled over for them, I will explain to the officer that I had them installed for saftey (so people will see me at night because I have a small black car). I can also say, "well, you saw me didn't you? Then my idea must work fine".

I was concerned with lens color and laws when I put clear bumper lenses on my blazer. I don't think you would have any problem replacing colored lenses with clears, as long as it doesn't include a reflector. i.e. the front turn signals on MX3s don't have a reflector, so you can do clear lens, yellow bulbs thing. The rear lenses have red reflectors in them that reflect red. If you make these clear, I can see where the fuzz would hassle you.
Required to be amber:
Front park/turn signals
Front marker lights
Required to be red:
Rear running/brake lights
Rear marker lights
Required to be amber OR red:
Rear turn signals
Any other colors, than you might get hassled by the fuzz.

I go to college in KY and have found that state to be the most lenient on anything having to do with automobiles unless you are over the speed limit. I'd go ahead and get them and not worry about it unless you get pulled over. As for the legality issue, whatever that sight that was posted will probably have the correct answer but as far as I know, the front side markers are not required to even be on the car because of the wraparound signals. So you should be able to do whatever you want with them, (unless your particular cops have issues with certain colors. Home in WV, cops will jump you if you have any blue, red or purple lighting, other than OEM) BTW-I just put clear side markers up front, orange bulbs behind, because I like the euro look. Haven't had any problems. I also had a set of clear front signals, euro style, on my last two GS's and never got any beef over them in either state. That's my input and expierences...

------------------
mason
MX3SE
ICQ#44771740
masonholmes@hotmail.com

Hey simo711, you might wanna change your signiture since there is no V4. Don't feel dumb or anything, I used to call 4cyl's the same because nobody had told me otherwise. It's an I4 for inline meaning the cylindars are in a line rather than in an oposing V design. You can change your info by clicking on profile and then going to yours or whatever. Don't want anybody to mess with ya because of that simple mistake Image

------------------
mason
MX3SE
ICQ#44771740
masonholmes@hotmail.com
