Help with Screw lights and how to connect..blah blah

Post by simo711 »

Okay, I went to pep boys and bought these screw lights for my license plate. They screw right in, but you have to hook the red wire to a + (positive) 12 volt ignition source. Now I'm not good with electrical parts of cars, what the hell does this mean? And I have to then connect the black wire to a negative ground. What is that now too? I thought of wiring them onto the rest of the brake wire, but how do I do this or what is the easiest way to hook these baby's up. It says I can make the screws hook up to an on/off switch. ANy hints on how to do this? Any help would be appreciated. Chris
------------------
Mazda MX-3, Black, Automatic, 1994 Base Model V4

id just try taping them into the Licence plate lights. The red wire is for a constant battery voltage that will only be on when the key is in the ignition and like with the radio works in the Acc position and On position. The Black is to say a bolt in the frame or body of the car. It "grounds the circuit and finishes the loop per`se.
I would try hooking them up to the taillights because you may have your new lights come on when you brake or turn.
What Are screw lights anyways?
But anyways, yeah, just splice the (+) to some other lights around there, and wrap the (-) end around a screw/bolt that's connected to the frame (because the frame of the car acts as a ground).
------------------
----
Gary Mui ( gary.mui@sinnovations2.com )
Sales Representative
Streamline Innovations 2
Vancouver, BC
604.312.9588
www.sinnovations2.com
mx3slimvisors.2ya.com

Screw lights are LED lights built into screws which you use to attach your liscense plate. They become your liscense plate lights. I am not sure how legal these lights are (it depends on what color they are). If they are not legal, then it might be in your best interest to hook a switch up to them so you can turn them off if needed.

Okay, thank you all for replying. That kind of helps me out. Now that I know the + and - stuff, how about making a on/off toggle switch? How does one who doesn't know much about this electrical system of a car make one? Let me know, thanks again, Chris
Pics will be available in a few weeks, it's taking a while to prep the car. I have graphics, new lights and all, etc
