New charge pipe for turbo KL, check it out

Post by rebel2k4 »

Got rid of the crappy bending pipe I had before.

you think you might be able to put a DSM intercooler up there and put a off set scoop on the hood so you can get some TMIC love?

is there a reason your MAF is after the turbo. from everything iv looked into it should be just after the filter and just before the turbo.
i was just wondering.

also i dont see your BOV. you really need one, trust me i blew a perfectly good engine with about 45K mil. on it. the pressure tore the rings rite up in less than 1500 miles. i went and got a ford probe bov (real cheep), the only thing with it is you have to rout the air release back in the intake somewhere after the MAF. its not the best looking thing but it does its job

The VAF location is allright. The Intake air temperature sensor will read true air temperature values, and will set the timing acordingly. Also, the closest you have the VAF to the Throttlebody, the better response your car will have.
The BOV is a safety device for the turbo, not for the engine. When on-boost the throttle plate is closed, there is a lot of backpressure built on the intake piping, forcing the turbine of the turbo to stop or turn backwards. This pressure loads the turbo bearings very much, increasing bearing freeplay and turbo failure. It also relieves boost spikes when downshifting.

Thanks for the comments guys. In case any of you were wondering, the reason why I added that piece of pipe between the VAF and TB is so I can mount 2 cold start injectors in there.

On my old intake pipe I had a 1st gen DSM bypass and it sounded like crap. Sounded like souring eagles or something when it released. On my new pipe I'm going to add a bosch BPV from a volvo.

Oh yeah, I might be eventually going the FMIC route if I can deliver enough fuel to hold a steady 10 psi and run rich.

Just a follow up on this. I am running 3 cold start injectors, an FMU, and a 190lph fuel pump and holding a solid 10 psi. Thanks to the LM-1 I know I am running a safe 11.8-12.2:1 in full boost.

After doing a bunch of boost runs, I can pull over and the compressor housing and charge pipes are cold to the touch! Thanks to water/alki injection. The intake mani on the other hand, damn those things get hot! Time for pheno's and ported intake manifold...

I am making a top fed fuel rail, which is mostly complete. I also have a megasquirt being currently assembled.

NEXT goal... 15 psi non intercooled!

you really want to melt your engine do you ??..

you know how much heat generate 15psi...I really don't think this is a good idea...at least get a little water/air intercooler top mounted

I am not concerned about running non intercooled, just the skinny little KL rods. I know I can push 15 psi and hold it together. Just wait and see.

Fortunately megasquirt does have a temp sensor that will tell me my exact charge temps in boost so I can keep an eye on that. I'll know if I need an intercooler or not, even though I already know I don't.

I guess you've probaly read this thread ..didn't notice you were running water injection though...I heard it helps a lot to reduce temps...but you really think it'll keep you from detenation at 15psi ?

You know I never did see that thread. I've been running water injection since the first day my MX3 was boosted, it has been a few months now.

I am using 50/50 denatured alcohol and distilled water through a 300cc nozzle. It turns on at 5 psi. That is the only way I have been able to push 10 psi successfully on 91 octane gas and no intercooler. Without it it detonates, even though it's running a safe a/f ratio. The nice thing that this gives that an intercooler doesnt is a nice bump in octane. Alcohol has a much higher octane than gasoline so spraying that in there lets you run more boost on lower grade octane. An intercooler wouldnt be able to do that....

I am going to go with an 80/20 mix once I up the boost to 15 psi, and for anything over 10 psi I'm going to run race gas.
