Rough shifting

Post by NonServiam »

My '92 V6 with 165.000km is rather rough shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, and not quite as smooth as I wish back from 3rd to 2nd either. Seems like there is a sync problem...

A common problem with the transmission? Easy to fix? Important to fix right away?

I should probably just get the local Mazda guy to give me an opinion, but finances are a bit tight at the moment, and I fear it will be expensive?

(Shelled out quite a bit of money when the water pump broke around Christmas and a got another leak in the cooling system when my lazy *** got surprised by etxreme cold (hey, it's Norway, we get this EVERY winter  ) and neglected to check my cooling fluid. At the same time, I had it 165.000 serviced, new "brake pads" (correct word in English?) and fixed an old leak in my Sebring exhaust.)

What kind of tranny fluid are you running right now? And what are the temperatures like where you're at now?

I got the same "problem". (I`m from Norway too)
Had it for as long as I can remember.
I`ll install my shortshifter and all the bushings + swap to Redline MT90.

If that doesn`t help, it might be the synchro rings in the tranny some people say (EXPENSIVE!!)

Bought the car in oktober 2003, and to be honest I haven't given the transmission fluid a thought at all. So whatever was there when I got it

The temps right now are not extreme at all. +5 to -10C. Periods of -10C to -20C occationally.

I`m not too sure, but when an hour at Mazda is like 800 Kroner, and they have to rip the entire tranny out etc. I`d probably guess around 4-6000,-

Almost the same job as changing the clutch (wich I did last year)

Get some good tranny fluid from redline or amsoil...you won't be sorry. May cost about $40 per fill up but you won't have any crappy feeling shifter after doing that, even in extreme temperatures.
