Help! Blue smoke from exhaust!

Hi!<P>Now it is time to take out car from garage after a long winter.<P>I have to do some work on engine. I am not good at engines so I wonder what could be wrong when blue smoke comes from exhaustsystem. It is visible when accelerating the car. I have to fill with oil quite often. Thands.

Blue smoke from the exhaust usually means that you have a oil leak somewhere in your engine. Most times it means that you may have crakced your head gasket. Which isnt a good thing.Hope this helps.

ummm ok disregard that last guys post... you have leaking valve cover gaskets... try and tighten them back up to torque specs first.. and clean any oil that is in the plug wells, and plug wires.. most of the time this will take car of the leak.. but if not you'll need new gaskets... not a major project, but a good shop manual will help ya... good luck

I wish there was a B.S. flag gremlin I could put here.<P>Blue smoke from the exhaust under acceleration probably means worn rings, especially if you're adding oil frequently. Sorry, but it looks like you're headed for an engine overhaul or a swap.

Well just to add to the confusion if it is the valve gasket then you would recieve or have oil in the wells around the plugs. But since you are getting blow by in the exhaust then it for sure is that the rings are not sealing. A gasket only stops leaks so a oil or what ever does not allow fluid in other spots. But the rings if they are damage or worn then they let the oil pass and then it gets burnt in the exhaust. <P>Since you have parked it for the winter a quick prob solve might be to try a additive in the oil if this helps or improves then you know that the rings are gone. i reaky hate toi make things worse but with the information given the only thing that anone can tell u right now is that u have an excessive amount of oil getting into the combustoin chambers which is creating the blue smoke. all the sugestions given are possible and each one should be looked into. with out more history or the car( millage mantanincs how the car was treated by previous owners) and without looking at the car all we can do is make edicuated guesses. but all are good ides and should be explored.

So what do you guys think?<BR>Oil burning seems to be a common problem with the K seires engines!<P>Now is the rings more likely to fail or are the valves seats and seals wearing out?<P>and does anyone know a way to find out where the problem lies with out tearing the heads off?

hey white fish the best way to tell if the valve cover is leaking the sure sign is that you are getting oil in the plug wells. that is easyest as for your rings if everything that you can see outside is clear then it is more than likly your rings why what is up in your car that has u so worried. normally you will not get a blue smoke in the exhaust if it is just a gasket. but for sure if it is blow by with faulty rings.<P>Just look for evidence of oil else where around the engine. No oil? Proceed to compression check. Low compression? Squirt oil into the cylinder, check compression again and see if it improves. If it does, then it's the rings. If not, then it's the valve seals/guides...or really, really bad rings!!
