Went to muffler shop and paid $45 to install(weld) new cat. Went right back to inspection place and guess what... HC reading was 11. Yeah, it was a bad cat. I think I'm finally done with all the problems with MX-3. BTW, my mechanic put synthetic oil without asking me and oil burning problem is gone ...

HC is usually showing how much oil is burning with your fuel. Check your spark plug gaps and make sure they are in spec. A catalytic converter that isnt functioning at full efficiency can also cause HC to read high (the cat isnt burning off all the bad stuff). HC = Hydrocarbons Cheers Tunes67 Tunes...

What a bummer... I failed TX inspection today. HC(??) was bit too high. 141 is normal at high speed which is 25mph, but I got 152. It was 199 before I fixed the problem though. Anyway, I'll see what my mechanic can do tomorrow. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

"zamn..i dont have that kind of money..lol..i will do it slowly n see wut happens.." I hear you, but I haven't spent any money on my MX-3 except regular tune up, oil and filters for a long time. It's been very reliable. I didn't do everything at once. I did small things(plugs, wire, rotor,...

BTW, I'd like to say thanks to Tunes67 for great support. I'm really happy to fix my car although I've spent ton of money. I really love this car.

Okay. My mechanic suspects that it's distributor, so I just ordered it. $317 from the dealership. I'm sick and tired of this, so I'll replace it right away. If this doesn't work, next will be O2 sensor. I'll keep you guys posted. Thanks for your help!!

Thanks!
Got the shop mannual and will do it soon. Manual says that I have to it when temp is around 68F. Hmmm... Where I live the lowest temp is like 80. If I drive my car to the shop, my engine will be hot. Can I still do it? Well, I guess I'll do it anyway though. Just curious.

Car dies when hot

Okay. I'm having this problem for about 1 year now. I just did complete tune up yesterday and thought the problem will be fixed, but not. My car stumbles and sputters when engine is hot. It gets worse if A/C is on. For example, I drop by grocery store, get out, start the car, turn on A/C and put my ...

Tune up is done. Belts, water pump, thermostat, coolant temp sensor, trans mount, engine mounts and all the seals and gaskets have been replaced. My mechanic did oil change without asking me and he put Mobil 1 10w-30. I use Mobil 1 for my other cars(240SX & 3000GT), so he just assumed that I put...

Like I say to everyone, its not really good to switch to synthetic on a car with a good amount of miles, I mean your 240sx was probably in decent condition (Plus the motor is practically indestructable as I learned), I would lean more towards using 10w30 castrol GTX with one Lucas Oil Stabilizer. P...

around 140,000 and oil slowly burning sounds right, not really much you cna do for it except maybe put in lucas oil stabilizer next oil change. Thanks for the tip. I have another car which is S13 240SX and switched from Valvoline Maxlife(10w-30) to Mobil 1(10w-30) when she had 100,000miles on it. K...

No there's no oil leak anywhere. I checked it myself. No bluish smoke either. I have to add around 1/2 quart between oil change.

Thanks for the info. Bought all parts from local dealership since they gave me 15% discount. My oil is burning I guess. I have to add little bit from time to time. What do I have to replace?
