Seems like it's essentially some plywood with felt covering. Any experiences?

Thanks for the offer man! I want to get one in mint condition, whether that means making one or buying one... and I'm leaning towards making since shipping would be a b----!

I haven't seen anyone make their own but I've seen a few customized ones, there was a fellow on the forum who reinforced his around the bits that always break off, I've seen some random kijiji ones were they have put mazda logos over top of it and I've seen a couple reupholstered ones.

Long long ago, in a land called MOCA, an ooooold forum member made a fiberglass one. He wanted to sell them but no one could afford it.

evil yeti still owes me a hatch cover or a refund lol

Interesting, thanks for the history/ideas everyone. Fiberglass does sound interesting, assuming you could felt them separately and install a hinge of some sort.
If anyone has a hatch cover that wouldn't mind taking some measurements that would be awesome.

Yes, My RS never had one so I made my own. I don't have any pictures of it though it turned out nicely.
I used a piece of nice stiff cardboard cut it to shape with almost the same shape as the stock one. I then made the flaps for the front and rear by only cutting one side of the cardboard and folding them over. I used a wood dowel for the rear of the cover to clip into the hinge points (I glued it to the cardboard). then I used fiberglass resign and laid a coat on the top and bottom, no matting as the cardboard soaks it up. after it dried I did a light sand and then glued dense foam squares to the underside as at the time I had a large sub setup. I then glued speaker box fabric on to the top and bottom and was done. most thought it was factory. it looked good and got the job done which was all I needed at the time.

Bad a--, thanks for the run down. I'm assuming you meant fiberglass resin? Speaker box fabric is a good idea.
