Wiring fog lights into A spec MX3

Post by RobMinhas »

Hello there,
I recently got my EDM bumper painted and when I install it I'd like to install my fog lights and my euro clears as well as my fog light switch.

Evo_Spec has offered to help me and both him and I are quite sure he can get the clears wired up as well as the fogs that plug into the harness attached to the clears. However, we do not know how the wiring works for installing the switch and even after searching the forum I couldn't get any more info on it. I know there are a few of us on the forum who know how to do it so I'm looking for guidance from you fellas.

Image
This is the wiring from the switch, there are a black with yellow stripe, a green, an orange and a grey wire coming from it, other then that, i know nothing. Where it should be wired to, what cables it should be wired to, etc.

Thanks in advance guys.

What's special about the clears? They're just signal light housings, you don't need to do anything special. The only little thing that's neat to do is to move the bumper's side marker bulb into the unused outlet in the signal light' there's a nice little spot for it that you need to punch it, that's it!

Image

Well, I can't tell from the circuit board, and all North American documentation wouldn't have it. But it's easy to find out with just a multimeter and wire it accordlingly. Easiest if you have a multimeter that buzzes for continuity, but here's how to check it:

1) Remove the light bulb (twist and pull)
2) Hold one of the test leads on the metal contact "1" for the light.
3) Pass the other lead on the wires A though D. Note which wire you find makes the contact.
4) Hold one of the test leads on the metal contact "2" for the light.
5) Pass the other lead on the wires A though D. Note which wire you find makes the contact.

*Note: Those 2 will be of course your light lines. My experience/guess is that ground, will be the black/yellow. It would be interesting if the Orange/White would be the positive for the light. I'm guessing because aftermarket headunits use Orange, Orange/White or Orange/Black for the dimming dash lights, but that's just a guess, and that wiring standard is GM-based. Don't want to confuse you, just putting that out there. The bulb may or may not be good, and on the OEM incandescent bulb doesn't care for polarity, but if you want to swap for an LED, it will, so make note on which is which in case.

6) Now you should have of course only 2 wires left. Easy test, put the leads on the end of each of the remaining wires, and you should get continuity between the two wires when the switch is on, and none when the switch is off. You WON'T be powering the fog lights directly, the wire gauge isn't big enough, so they'll trigger a relay.

I gotta try to give as much info as I can. Figured as much, and I'm leaving in the middle of the night Tuesday for a month-long exercise, so in case I can't do much/am limited to my phone, I'll pass on as much info as I can now, even in case should give you hopefully just enough into to be able to figure it out yourselves if need be.

In case you can find a "dual 87" relay (automotive relay specifically for wiring lights), than you can clean up the wiring a bit:
Image

See the picture on the relay how 87 and 87a are connected together with the same line, that's the one you would use for the "dual 87" setup above. Mine listed both pins 87 since they're both connected, but that's basically it.
Image

Than this one is just an ordinary automotive relay, see how 87 and 87a are seperate. That would be for a regular setup in my previous replay/diagrams with both fog lights tied together to the same pin on the relay.
Image

Also, the "from 12v live power source", don't tap into the parking lights line, it shouldn't be enough to drive all of the lights. If you want a clean install, AND your Mx-3 doesn't have ABS or A/C, rather than add s--- to the positive battery terminal or an aftermarket block, use those unused spots in the fuse box that's in the engine bay. They're live, they just need a standard fuse (40amp max for the fog lights because the relay will only be good to 40amps). That little fuse box is easy to take off, and you just need a female spade connectors. One is a standard size spade connector, the other is slightly larger (think it was the A/C) which I found the large size spade connector at a local automotive store.
Image

Can't find a picture online of that little fuse box in the engine bay, but you know which one I mean...it sits right beside the other one. If you want to take out that fuse box to bring it unto the store you can to find the right spade connector you can, I believe that line is bolted in, just be careful since it's easy to forget that that line is live, so keep it away from metal ;) If you gotta drive your Mx-3 to the store, just seal it up good because that line is direct and unfused if I remember right.

I have AC :(

Fortunately Evo_Spec is much more knowledgable about wiring so I think we may be good.

Once again, thanks for the info.

Either ABS or A/C, there's 2 spots in that fuse box, so if one is taken, just use the other, no biggie. Besides, if I remember right, the ABS spot uses a regular spade connector, so no running around to find an odd connector.

just to clarify, my only issue was with the switch because i don't have a multimeter, if we were to use a different switch i wouldn't have any issues.

i was going to explain that the area for a 2nd light was already on every signal housing but that it needed to be cut open but i was running late for work so i didn't bother
i've already done the euro clears on my car.

this is a lot of good info, thanks nd4spdse. I should be able to get this working if i can get a multimeter

Yeah, I'm back home for summer, I considered doing them but I didn't want to risk screwing it up so I'm gonna wait till I"m back in Calgary for the school year.
