KJ, Yes You Read Right! KJ-ZEM Powered 2002 Protege

Post by Nd4SpdSe »

It's been discussed for so many, many, years, now you can see it@ Stil in the works, but it fires up so far!
Remember too that the Protege doesn't take the K-series naturally, the car had a KLZE swap it in before and he decided to go KJ.

I'm surprised there's not much interest in this thread. The KJ swap has been discussed to death for many years and I've never seen it done?!

It just seems like so much work to do for a relatively small increase in power. And its kind of an ugly engine.
94' RS/GS/MS/CF Monster Turbo...coming soon.
93' GS SE, the Black Beast, the former love of my life...soon to be gutted and crushed.
94' GS, black on black, now in several small pieces...and one large crushed piece.
2007 Mazda3 GT Sport --- super fun
2004 Honda RC51 --- Lost forever to some theavin' bastard

Its not the horsepower the KJ has, but the torque at 3500 rpm - 210 ft/lbs

That will pull

Well it has been an idea I have thrown around for a couple of years. The problem is clearance in the MX3. It will not clear the hood. So some custom IM and IC work needs to be done. OR one would have to re-fabricate the motor mounts and lower the engine and trans in the car making them closer to the ground... I found some interesting things on this motor and SC that with a couple of home modifications to the exhaust and some porting on the SC one could see an increase of up to 50 HP creating a 260 - 280 HP monster on stock fuel mapping, while reducing the PSI that the SC produces. I guess the best gain can be had from swapping out the stock exhaust manifolds and changing them with some nice headers.

I WOULD LOVE TO SWAP THIS SETUP IN AN MX-3 :) but realistically been looking at dropping one in a festiva

I have been following this from before its conception on Ford Festiva Forum and Club Protege ;)

Also I know some of the MOCA guys had fit them together years ago but there were several clearance issues.

It's a real good engineering job, making mounts and trying to fit everything under the hood.

Who knows where his installation and modification pics are ? There are 20pages and don't want to go through them all .. :freak:

In the MX you would have to make new mounts but the Pro not so much. Its more of a wiring nightmare.

I still think it would fit in a Festiva... It would be such a sleeper

If you are going to supercharge might as well just go with the mercedes relatively "bolt on" option

I agree I think it's an ugly engine and you would have zero room to work on it - worse than a v6!

you guys do know that that is a plastic engine cover. right?

It is not that much different minus the cover and intercoolers front and rear. It is based off of the K series motor. I think it is a more modern looking. I think mainly because I look at it as the "cool" factor. I just really like this motor.
