I'm pretty sure you'll get an engine code if your maf is bad.

-It's quite simply. With your car engine on, take off the maf conector, if nothing change with the engine rotation probably the maf is damaged.
-But if the engine rotation goes down, or the engine dies probably the maf is in a good condition.
-This test must be used together with error code, if there is it.

This is the proper way. I don't know what pins to jump or what readings you should see but it's in the online manual I think

if it has a Vane, its a VAF.

Volume Air Flow meter, since the vane cannot directly measure mass (it needs density in order for that, and the ECM does that with the onboard baro sensor and a simple calculation)

A MAF uses a hotwire to determine mass directly.

/Rant.

Here's the procedure:

no 94 and 95 1.6 mx3s use cone style mass air flow meters with a hot wire and the online manuals and my chiltons manual dont have it that way. ive had this prob with these cars from the start. same thing with the tps. the manual and automatic trans cars have the same tps but the manuals say different. its a huge pain.

... I have never ever seen a 4 cyl with a cone style VAF.

Either I'm uneducated, or you're crazy :)

ATX TPS has 4 pins, MTX has 3. This is a problem with all MTX swap guys.

Maybe you have the wrong VAF in your car, maybe someone crazy put a K series one in it?

What markings are on it? JE50? KL02?

well being that i have had a 93, a 94 and a 95, i know what i am talking about. like i said, this is an issue i have had from the get go with these cars. the mass air flow sensor in the 94 and up dohc motor is a cone type (b6bf). if you check your local online parts stores, you will see this. in 94 they switched from sohc 1.6 to dohc 1.6 and EVERYTHING is different. new intake manifold with a VICS system, bigger bore throttle body, different idle air control valve, internal coil distributor, exhaust mani, egr valve is added (the sohc motors didnt have one), switch to cone style mass air flow meter and multi wire o2 sensor.

Maybe someone should do a write up about this. i have a ton of pictures. i have all kinds of parts from the sohc to the dohc. the blocks are exactly the same. the big issue i ran into was that the tps on the manual AND automatic trans cars are actually the same. they BOTH use a 4 wire. i really dont know why but they do. the throttle bodies are the same and they use the same IAC (which is the same as a 94 to 97 miata 1.8 IAC.)

I've owned my share of MX-3's too, apparently that doesn't matter. I have a all three styles sitting in my garage too. Looks like a vane type, but there's no moving parts inside.

You're right on the B6 TPS's. Its the ATX BP that is a 3 wire. My bad.
