License plate lights cover?

Should there be a piece of plastic covering the license plate lights?
My MX-3 looks like this (photo is taken at the right side looking up into the rear bumper):

Is this how it's supposed to look?
If there should be a cover, how does that look?

Hope someone here will take their time to answer. Thanks in advance.

What country are you from?

It looks like you don't have any lights at all?

This is what the plastic covers look like (there are 2 sets in the pic)

I'm from Denmark. There are not many MX-3's on the streets here any more. Most are eaten away by rust, mainly due to the weather and the fact that we use extreme amounts of salt on our roads in the winter.
My car is 15 years old now, but in quite good shape. It gets a complete anti-rust treatment every 2 years. I've had it for 4 years now and love driving it.. actually I got my drivers license in an MX-3, some 17 years ago :)

Your question made me double-check the license plate lights.
I do have lights, but not very strong ones:

But there is direct access to the iron-plate, on which the lights are attached. Should there be something covering the area marked with yellow in this picture?

Is there a kind soul, who will take a look at their mx-3 and tell me if I'm missing some part?
That would make me happy :)

Mine looks like that also and I dont think Im missing anything.
I think it is quite common though for that piece to rust out and the lighs fall out.
You could change the bulbs for stronger whiter LED ones?

Thanks a lot for the answer!
Maybe I should change the bulbs. Got to check if the danish law says anything about how much light is allowed though.

mine looks like that too..
but the metal plate holding the lights is broken, due to rust. (one of the lights has come off twice, hanging in the wires)
i'm thinking that i'll make some new ones from led strips.
(im from denmark too)

I don't even have a licence plate light. No wiring even either.
