The "Quick Question" Thread

by Ryan
This thread is meant to be a safe haven for noobs who are having trouble. There will be no flamage, there will be no overwhelming "SEARCH MORON!" chorus, just a place for people to ask a question, and get an answer.

This will hopefully collect all of the noob repeat questions which happen all the time, including but not limited to:

Do they come in black
How do you tell if its a ZE
What can I do to make lots of power
Can I do a RWD B13 setup

If this takes off, the thread would appreciate a sticky so its the first thing in the V6 Tech/Perfomance link.

So, please, be nice.

hey, I need a few of those too, brake booster size, if anyone wants to throw them in the mail for me :)

John, Normally I'd suggest some sort of JB weld solution, but knowing your engine bay...

Maybe that black plastic plumbing (PVC? ABS?) will have something close that you could perma-glue in place and still look clean.

Also, I've found that farmyard supply places are MUCH more helpful than autopart places.

Ok which way do I turn the oil filter to remove it?
Umm Will a wheel rim from a 1964 Studebaker fit my Mx3?
Instead of using NOS why can't I just connect a can of butane with a bic lighter fitting and install a solenoid, I could T it off and use half the T to light cigarettes for the Bit*hes I pick up while cruising. That would be so totally cool don't you think :D

Danny, all good ideas, I suggest you pursue each thing there whole heartedly and report back.

So I went racing this weekend, the car held up great, didn't break a sweat at all, kept up with a Cooper S, and waited at half throttle behind some Matrices. (Matrixes)

Car was mint.

Then I ditched it on the way home on my UHP summer tires in a 200' slush patch on the highway. It snowed like 2" over night and I had left my car at the track. It ran like a sack of poop after towing it out. Threw a bunch of codes(mostly VAF codes, AIT code 8, for one), checked it all over, lots of grass up the belt side (and all over the exterior). But it all checked out fine, coolant was still full, oil still full, no real damage

Only one codes comes back when at <10% throttle in gear, the TPS code, 12.

It idles sometimes at regular hot idle, 1100, and most often at 2200, searching a bit. It jerks like I don't know how to drive if I give it low throttle below 2.5k

TPS was nowhere near the water or grass or debris in general, so I'm thinking some of my wiring is messed.

Any other possible solutions?

This is a picture after racing for a whole day :)

Burned off half a tank of premium in 90 km's.... best $30 I ever spent.

Car looks good Ryan. I'm thinking the heat from the engine should help evaporate any water that might be causing any shorts. Of course the obvious, check the spark plugs for water, disty for moisture under the cap. You know it's spring in the rest of Canada, what the hells wrong with Manitoba? You people seem to have an affinity with flooded areas lile your drawn to it like moths to a porch light. :P

if the max psi limit for my tires is 44, how much should i actually put in? i bought a motor mount for the front which is apparently the right one but the 2 bolts that go in the crossmember are about a quarter inch to far apart think i could shave one bolt hole to make it fit?

If you're unsure of what to run in your tires, look on the driver's side door, it should recommend something on that sticker.

I run 35-38 PSI for DD, and 40 for racing. Lower PSI will absorb more road bumps, but soften the sidewall (car feels mushy in corners)

Yup, the PGT front mount is a little beefier. Just drill out the holes in the cross member, no big deal.

thanks so much Ryan. My uncle was the one at the store who sold me the mount so i didn't think he would sell me the wrong mount. i had no idea if i should return it or drill it out. Another thing too was that the only mount the store can get ordered in is the front mount. I've called Canadian tire, c&r auto which is the shop i usually get most my parts and quite a few junk yards. I only found 1 v6 at the j/y.Might be a dealership part. and yeah my suspensions a little messed up so i figured the least i could do was have the right amount of air in. Ive been keeping it at 30 ill start putting in 35.

Ryan, how do I crank the engine without starting the car? I am replacing the power steering pump and I need to flush the fluid. Thanks.
