You need to be more specific.

(48/2)(9+3) = 288

48/(2(9+3)) = 48/24 = 2

Wow, compared to the other forums this was pretty much solved by the second post :lol: :lol: Well, the big argument is PEMDAS and how its written, but as you wrote, yeah, the answer is 2.

You just need to use more brackets and there is no confusion.

On a neat little side note, did you know that contests have "skill testing questions" because if they didn't, it would be considered gambling?

See that's the thing, some don't do the "extra" parenthesis so they do the problem, how it's written and it's 288. I've even asked a math teacher and he said that. On the GRM board the topic went to over 10 pages and people were explaining calculus and all that and asking PH.d's in math and their professors :lol: It got intense!

I don't know how you'd bring calculus into a simple algebra problem without variables.

The problem is that the second brackets are implied, but not actually present in the equation as it is posted in the topic title, which is why people will argue that it could be solved either way.

The real question is, does order of operations stricly require that division occurs before mulitplication? The mnemonic "BEDMAS" is simply a memory device. I would argue that there is no true hirarchy between mulitiplication and division. Together, they must come before addition and subtraction, but strictly speaking either the multiplication or the divition can be done first and this is just a really poorly phrased mathmatical question.

I could answer this question either way and get it right on a university math test.

yeah I mean, exactly, that's the whole thing about this, a lot don't realize all this. While it is a simple equation, you do have to use some "intermediate" so to say, methods. The big argument really lies into the, "does the division have to come before the multiplication", like you said. Most people either stand by PEMDAS or BEDMAS. I think that's the main thing with this, is that it's poorly written :? But it's all over different forums lately and some of them REALLY get into it, as we did over at the GRM board :lol:

PEMDAS is in short BS. here's an example of taking PEMDAS literally: 10 - 5 + 2. according to PEMDAS the answer should be 3. hopefully you realize that that's not the case.

Ever wonder about those people who say they are giving more than 100%? We have all been to those meetings where someone wants you to give over 100%.

How about achieving 103%?

Here's a little mathematical formula that might help you answer these questions:

If:
A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z

Is represented as:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26.

Then:
H-A-R-D-W-O-R-K
8+1+18+4+23+15+18+11 = 98%

and

K-N-O-W-L-E-D-G-E
11+14+15+23+12+5+4+7+5 = 96%

But ,

A-T-T-I-T-U-D-E
1+20+20+9+20+21+4+5 = 100%

And,

B-U-L-L-S-H-I-T
2+21+12+12+19+8+9+20 = 103%

AND, look how far a-- kissing will take you.

A-S-S-K-I-S-S-I-N-G
1+19+19+11+9+19+19+9+14+7 = 118%
So, one can conclude with mathematical certainty, that while Hard work and Knowledge will get you close, and Attitude will get you there, its the bulls--- and a-- Kissing that will put you over the top.

I have a good one..

Assumption #1 - Knowledge is power
Assumption #2 - Time is money

Since power = work/time, then knowledge = work/time, and time = money, so we get knowledge = work/money. Solving for money we get:

Money = work/knowledge.

Thus, as knowledge approaches zero, money approaches infinity, regardless of the amount of work done :D
