Ford Probe compatability

I have a question... currently experiencing brain farts due to work overload and too much travel.
Is the engine in the 1993 Ford Probe GT a KLDE?

I've been searching for heads to extract spring retainers from for my KLZE... found a set from a Ford Probe, but now realize that different years had completely different engines. Would the heads be the same as a K engine?
thanks guys!

KL

The 2.5 L (2497 cc) KL family uses an 84.5 mm bore and 74.2 mm stroke. It includes the Japan-only KL-ZE, which produced 199 hp (149 kW) and 165 ft·lbf (224 Nm). Another variant, the KL-DE (also known as the KL-03 outside the USA, and fitted to 2.5 litre Ford Probes) was the worldwide version, with 164-174 hp in various applications. In 1998 a revised version of the KL known as the KL-G4 was used in the 626. It featured solid lifters, a cast crankshaft to reduce rotating mass and a reworked intake system. The distributor was replaced with a Ford EDIS coil-pack ignition.

Mazda introduced a key technology with these engines, known as the Variable Resonance Induction System (VRIS). A series of two butterfly valves coupled with electronically controlled actuators varied the volume and length of a resonant chamber attached to the intake manifold, producing 4 resonant frequencies. The valves actuate at particular engine frequencies (i.e. RPMs) to produce optimal torque/horsepower output at any given engine speed.

Applications:

* KL-DE
o 1993-1997 Mazda MX-6 GT (E and J spec)
o 1993-1997 Mazda MX-6 LS (A spec)
o 1993-1997 Ford Probe GT
o 1992-1995 Ford Telstar TX5 Ghia, TX5 Ghia 4ws
o 1993-1997 Mazda 626 ES, LX (after 1994)
o 1995-2002 Mazda Millenia L
* KL-ZE
o 1997 Mazda Capella Wagon
o 1993+ Mazda MX-6 Jspec
o 1993+ Mazda MS-8 (Japan)
o 1993+ Mazda Eunos 600/800 (Japan)
* KL-G4
o 1998-2002 Mazda 626 ES, LX

All PGT's have the EXACT same block/heads/manifolds etc. A few electronic differences is all. Not sure where you're getting your info.

She meant in regards to the 1st gen probe vs. the 2nd gen. '93 was the 2nd gen cut-off, and they split into the i4 and V6 categories. I can only assume this is what she's talking about... It's an honest enough question though.

Lesley, as pox(and wikipedia) stated the KL-DE is in the Probe GT model, the other model(s?) come equipped with an i4.

I've heard tid-bits about differing sizes of the lifters though, and haven't been able to verify this myself. As always though, if re-using old lifters keep them under the same cam lobes!

I'll be using the heads & lifters from the KLZE, with interprep springs. The swap stalled while I tried to track down some retainers... yeah, you just verified the info I'd previously read, but wanted to confirm with you MX experts :D

Lots of dead brain cells here - been travelling way too much for work and the airports were nuts today.

Just be aware the Probe KL doesn't work as well as the Mazda KL, mostly due to that 4 letter word on the valve cover screwing up the tuning... :P

Flying is never fun(at least for me), I'm sorry to hear you were held up!!

Inodoro, you couldn't be more right! Especially avoid those Honduh valve covers, I hear they don't infect your mind and make you think you drive a rocketship.

I heard using honda covers give instant V-TEC and mad torque.

I might have to give that some thought... with stickers too of course!

If your looking for replacement parts for a klze head, the only car that was offered in the US with that head was the 1995 millenia ONLY. (depending on what part you need... as some parts do cross over from the de head) :wink:

Only when you've got matching VTEC stickers all over the exterior as well. Without the matching set you only get half the mad torque, so slap em on good!!
