Paint suggestions?

Hey everyone. i think i have finally come to the conclusion that i want to try and give my car the "$50 roll on paint job" this spring. ive been doing alot of reading on it the past few days and from what ive seen, with a bit of patients and hard work you can get some good results.

right now my cars paint is in ok shape, in some places its really nice and can polish up quite well, but in others its cracking, and i have clear coat peeling in quite a few places. im having a hard time deciding what colour i want to go with. for paint im leaning more towards marine urethane based. so far ive narrowed it down to:
a nice glossy white
flat white
flat black
flat grey
"battleship grey"
or have an attempt at mixing a glossy grey and glossy black to come up with something close to gunmetal.

x2 on the white.

BTW: I may be mistaken (Mitmaks is the man to ask), but as far as I know gun metal is more like a charcoal/silver mix...

ive always liked white mx3's. maybe ill give the flat white a try. itd be different from all the flat black cars around now and probably wouldnt be as hard to get a even surface as glossy eh?

as for gunmetal, id be happy with a dark glossy grey.

is white a "hard" colour to get nice results with? does anyone know if you still need to wetsand everything to a smooth surface for a matte finish? im assuming because its not a reflective surface i probably wouldn't have to sand it much if any?

I would assume you take the same steps as a gloss color. primer paint wetsand clear coat. The finish will just be flat.

Battleship Gray would be DIFFERENT!!! Here's a car with a similar color, and it's flat...

Go big, go different! :P

Hmmm...I hate to be the voice of dissent here (well, maybe not much...;)), but I think any flat color other than black would be a royal pain to keep clean. Besides that, I can tell you out of my own experience that flat white sounds much better than it looks (when I bought my MX-6 it was completely flat), and flat Navy grey (or battleship grey) is just...well, primer...

i'm with Inodoro, here...
I used to be a car detailer and cleaned a flat white car (a ford laser), and bird poo had been left on it for about a month, and I was unable to get the stains off... and trust me, it shows up!!
I'm not a fan of matte/flat colours all together, so maybe its just me being difficult, but grey does look like primer, and matte black looks like a chalk board/black board...

thanks for the info guys. looks like flat white is out, and i also only really like flat black as a flat colour other then white, i can just see it getting "stains" in th paint ethand said.

the battleship grey i found looks like its a glossy colour from the tiny sample rustoleum provides on their page, i also havnt been able to find any good examples of it used in real life. http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=4

as for the flat grey idea i was talking more like a dark flat grey, i think these are vinyl wrapped but i dont know how well it would turn out with cheap paint.

before i go ahead with the paint process ill probably try and find a couple samples of the colours i narrow it down to and see what they look like in real life. i have an old banged up door i could do my test jobs on and go from there.
so far i think its narrowed down to:
glossy white
battleship grey
dark flat/glossy grey
flat black

EDIT:
this is another sample of battleship grey ive found, with a bit of flat black added i think i could match it to the bmw perfectly.

if you are going to cheap out and roll it, get a gloss. It will be harder to make it look uniform, but it will last more than a week with out burnishing

White is my least favorite color for a car. If I ever have another MX-3 dark metallic grey is the color I have always planned to go with. That Porche ^^^^ is absolutely sick.

dark metallic grey is also the colour id like to have my car. the only problem is finding some paint that is what i want. so far all the greys have been way to bright/non-metallic or look horrible.

ugh i wish i could find this paint, i think its probably the best mettalic grey ive seen http://www.teamrd.com/2009/06/paint-bod ... -metallic/

does anyone know if it would be possible to roll on higher quality automobile paints? theres some nice colours of urethane paint on ebay that could be had for $100 or so to do the whole car. i know its meant for spraying but do you guys think it could be rolled on the same as rustoleum?

this paint would be sweet if i could use it successfully
