96 MX-3 GS (K8) Body Work - In Progress

Post by JDMChris »

When i bought the car, it was in pretty good shape.. Just been doing little things to it ever since.
The motor runs great (K8) and it had very little rust (rear wheel wells, and door)

The car is painted in "Rage Red"
I Started off by Painting the mirrors, front lip, front mud guards, rear wing, and rims glossy black.

It looks pretty good.

just started on the body work..
Here is a pic showing a bit of the passenger side before the work started.

Here are some pics of the work..

I used short strand fiberglass body filler... imo, it works better than bondo. To finish it off, used some fine finishing putty. The picture above is it all done with a cote of sandable primer. I have the color matched, just waiting to get some clear.

I plan on finishing the body work this week as i leave for vacation on friday.
Starting the Driver side tomorrow and then the back bumber the next day.. finishing with he hood on Tuesday

I'm not expert but it looks great! You've got some talent.

Finished wet sanding the primer on the passenger side with 800 grit paper. Put on 2 coats of the base coat..

It still needs another 2 coats of base and some clear to get the shine back. Looks pretty good.

I also started on the front hood... there was a pretty nice dent from a rock or something. i also took off the badge.. gunna hang it from my rear view mirror.

Tomorrow, im going to start on the other side... hopefully. I only have 3 hours a day to work on it.

It's probably not most professional way but it beats taking it to Maaco. You're saving lots of money by doing it yourself and learning along the way.

Great work man. I'm doing my black car currently, I wish it were as small a project as yours... I've never done body work before this, and I'm fabricating panels... rockers, wheel arches, etc... I never thought to take pictures.
