Hi guys ive just got another mx3 after selling my old one last year. Its a 1991 presso 1.8 v6 jap import. Its on 200,000 km around 126,000 miles. Everythings seems ok with the car, but i have one problem , the previous owner didnt have much knowledge on the car and i got it cheap.
The problem i have is the car pops out of gear in 3rd somthings 2nd and mainly 5th. Also theres a buzzing sound that you can here inside and outside the car almost like rally cars make when they are speeding up, this is really clear and sounds like electrical buzzing but i know the electrics are fine. The car also is leaking a few drops of oil i cant see if its engine oil or gear box oil.
The car runs fine in 4th gear and does not pop out in 4th , i can engage the gears fine altho alittle bit stiff if the car is not running.
I would really like as much info as possible on this please. Also if it comes to needing a new gearbox which one do i need as its not a uk speak mx3.
cheers guys

check the fluid and swap it out see if there are any metal shavings or metal chunks in the oil, if so thats bad news, also check the shifter bushings see if there is any play, sometimes when you have excessive wear in them the car will not fully engage a gear, but thats usually apparent for all gears or at least more than 1. If they were hard on 3rd gear then it can round off the ends of the teeth reducing the contact area and allowing it to pop out of gear so I would do a fluid level check and swap to get you started out.

your trans holds 1.6 quarts, so two bottles of 75-90 will do you

--also, when you go to drain the fluid (which is VERY easily done by turning the wheels to the left and jacking the DF) pull the fill plug first, and if anything comes out you know you werent running low or bone dry, leave the fill plug out to make draining faster, if you drive it for a few miles then the gear oil will be warm and easily flow cuz that crap is STUBBORN when its cold

it also mixes up the fluid and junk in it aiding in getting all the old crap out, the best time to change oil or tranny fluid is just after driving it just make sure you do not burn yourself in the process. Also make sure that its the proper type, redline mtl works well in these transmissions.

Ryan is correct the noise could be anything but always follow the k.i.s.s. principle for troubleshooting, keep it simple stupid, always start with the simpler problems and work your way toward the more difficult. Its hard to say exactly what the cause is until you do the simpler fixes.
