V6 Engine lives long?

Post by Maverick »

Hi all!

i've a friend selling is mazda mx3 v6, is a canadian versione, precidia!

It has 225.000 km. I would like to know if, for an engine like this, are they very much or i could do at least 80.000 km with no problems!

thanks a lot, regards! :)

Well, it won't blow up one day, but if it isn't leaking oil already, it will slowly start... and thats about it. Can you turn a wrench? lots of easy options to swap it out.

And of course it will need some maintenance, probably another waterpump and timing belt

Impossible question to answer.

It all depends on how well it was maintained and how hard it was driven over those 225 k

There are ways to tell, compression test, leakdown test, gas mileage, Emissions numbers etc

I owned a probe GT with a KL that had 461xxx kms and ran fantastic. Ive also seen them in the junk yark with less than 200k on the odometer

Most people don't keep the K8 long, they'll usually swap to a KL long before any problems arrise in a K8, lol.

I'm driving a MX-3 Precidia V-6 K8, it has about 320,000km on it and so far (touch wood) no major problems since I've had it, which was around 275,000km except a fan belt and an alternator. Although now I've said this its probably gonna blow up or something thanks to Murphy's law

You need to come over, and give an offering to our shrine to Murphy that Sarah made!

To the OP, Depending on how your car was treated, it will last until... well I won't jinx anything. Check the compression, plugs, etc.. and do a routine maintenance. If you know a good mechanic (and are not one yourself) have them look at it for tell-tale signs of abuse.

i've read that every 60.000 km time belt has to be done to preserve v6 integrity! how can i know it? Of course, except asking it!

That would be 60'000miles, or 100'000kms, but technically that's not true, they are non-interference motors which means that if the timing belt breakes, there's little-to-no chance of valvetrain damage.

There's really no way to know the life left on the belt. If you need it to be totally reliable, you should change the belt, and distributor. You don't have to change the distributor if it's 96, or newer.

thanks again to all!

now the question is moving around..

why to change engine? ok ok , performances are far far away of the little 1.8 v6, but it sucks so much that anyone do the swap?

i've seen some videos on youtube and it seems really fast and pleasant to drive due to necessary torque at any rpm?

am i wrong?

It's only 130hp. Even back in those days you could get Civcs, Integras and Preludes with 200hp

If you want performance to compete, a swap is really the only way. But if fun is what you want and you're happy with your K8, than so be it, to each their own.
