OBDII motor in 94 MX3

Post by OkieOFT »

Long time reader, first time poster!

I've got a 1994 MX3 RS, with a blown 1.6L motor. I was getting ready to head to a yard to purchase a rediculously overpriced B6 tomorrow. I noticed that the BP also came in the Kia Sephia. I decided to check Ebay and low and behold there is a a BP out of a 1997 Sephia just 20 miles from my house. I went ahead and bought it, then got to reading. I then discovered that the 1997 Sephia is OBDII. :?

How is this going to effect my swap? I want to just run the new motor off of my 1994's ECU. Will the sensors on the OBDII BP interface with my OBD1 computer? Or am i in for a world of pain?

Grab an ECU from a OBD1 protege/escort GT and you should be ok.
Do not use a B6 ECU on a BP.

Check my worklog for the wiring diagrams for the 94 RS.

Why can't I use the B6 ecu? I'm sure I can eventually find one, but i'm really trying to complete this as cheapy as possible. I just want to get it moving under it's own power, pulling it up onto a trailer is a PITA! I'll sort out the electrical crap once it's running again.

It won't run right. I'm a V6 guy so I don't know much about these swaps but it looks like there are plenty of resources available for you in this section.

The b6 will run it, but not well. There are many issues that can and eventually will arise by using the wrong ECM, so if you have to, only use it for transport when necessary.

You can't be a cheapass with some things. Its literally impossible, because if you try and go the cheap route, it will cost you much more in the long run.

Get the two motors out, and compare them. Swap over the sensors from the B6 onto the BP that different, and note which ones are extra. Put the BP in, and plug in B6 harness. If you're running a b6 harness, you can plug a BP09 ECM into it. Once you get it running on the BP09 just wait for problems to arise. CEL, bad milage, running rough.

there is no such thing as an "OBDII motor" Just the sensors on it are for OBDII.

Ok, there are several Protege's at a yard around here. Probably could have gotten a cheap engine out of one of them but one had a hole through the block, the rest were siezed up.

My MX3 is an auto, and i've read that the BP09 was for manuals and the BP10 was for auto's, is that right?

Can I use my harness with the BP ECU, or do I need that too? I wasn't saying I want to permanently run it off the B6 ECU, but a couple of months till I can round up the nessecery parts.

couple of months is a bad idea.

BP10 is the BP automatic ECM for OBDII. They shouldn't be much more than $30, so try http://www.clubprotege.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; or maybe PM turpro on here.

If you have a SOHC, your harness will plug right in. I don't for sure if there are any difference between the BP auto and the B6 auto... I can't imagine there are. That would just be mean. If you're concerned, cross check wiring diagrams...

You can at least use those trashed proteges for parts that you might need.

the 94 mx3 dohc harness doesn't match anything that i am aware of.
the sensor can be mixed but not the harness.

I believe ariesdude here has a worklog with the OBDII BP auto tranny as well. You HAVE to do modifications to your wiring harness, or buy a 93 wiring harness to replace it IIRC.
