1.6L SOHC to BP-T

Intro:

A buddy of mine as managed to rack up 2.5 grand for his mx-3 engine swap project. We are three guys from an engineering and technologies program of which only 40 people are accepted and is offered by our college. We are smart guys who love cars and manual work! Two of us drive and 92' mx-3 and the other a dodge stealth twin turbo. We have been reading a lot of stuff on mx-3.com but then get very confused in threads and post by people b----ing at one another and flamewars but we expect to get this swap underway by this Friday!

Clear things up:

So before we begin, let's clear thing up!

My buddy's 3 is a B6-ME 1.6l SOHC with an F series transmission ( F5M-R ). He has decided he wanted a BP-T 1.8L DOHC Turbo engine. This is the exact one we will be picking up in the next couple of days! http://www.fnfmotors.ca/JDM-BP-Turbo-DO ... mazda7.htm

Now to our understanding, the BP-T will bolt right up to the F series transmission, correct? Some say that the G series is a worthy investment, but isn't that from the V6 engine, how does that bolt on the the BP-T?

Another thing we have noticed is that there is no ECU or wiring harness that comes with the engine listed above or starter!
1. From which make/model/year of car could this be found in?
2. For that starter, can we the old from the B6-ME?
3. Should we just find one with ECU, un-cut harness and starter to make our life easier? if not, how much more difficult is it to do it ourselves? (splicing and all for the wires)

Some information about the turbo would be nice! Like make/model efficiency/boost?

Other information:

- I guess thing likes valve gasket, head gasket, oil pan gasket manifold gasket, throttle body gasket could be replaced (any others worth mentioning?).
- Obviously all OILS and FLUIDS (engines, transmission, anti-freeze, brake) and what grades are recommended best.
- Poly-urethane filled engine mounts, worth the investment?
- All belts (drive belt, accessories belt, timing belt)?
- Spark plugs, spark plus wires, distributor cap and rotor (which plugs and wires are best for the turbo'ed engine?).
- Any nuts and bolts usualy needing some replacement i.e. axle nuts?
- Any unforeseen extra wires/splicing to do (if we get un-cut harness and ECU of course)?
- New clutch package I take it!
- New axles! Maybe not right away, but in the near future!
- Adjustments (TB sensor, timing).
- Anything special anyone would like to add in?

Besides all that, to my understand, its all lines up, bolts up and plugs n plays??

Thanks!

P.S. If you have any motors being sold to suggest to us, be it near Montreal! We would like pick-up so we can get this started Friday!

--Yeah, the F series transaxle should bolt up and work, how long it will last, not sure  :D
--G-series would be the "upgrade" . A 4cyl G-series, can be found in BP engined protege's and escort GT's (Kia G series are said to be somewhat better, that is what I am running) OR go this route, Toyota E153 transmission swap (can be found in the Clubprotege link below)

Some information about the turbo would be nice! Like make/model efficiency/boost?
stock turbos
GTX bpt -- IHI VJ20 (good to 15psi)
GTR bpt -- IHI VJ23 (can go 20+ psi)
I would say, start checking out and searching the Forced Induction forum and worklogs for more information. Also, http://www.clubprotege.com has alot of information as well.
:D

Thanks for the info!

And for the GTX, GTR BP engines, is that like what people call the old and new gen BPs, GTR being the new?

Since we cant find any BP GTX's with uncut wires and ECU WITHOUT the AWD tranny, we thought of buying this BP GTR we found for cheaper with ECU, uncut harness for cheaper. I imagine that F series wont hold no more.. how much would a G series cost if we went and got one from the junkyard??

thanks

Cool!

What about the cluster?? Isn't it going to be electronically controlled now?

OK, so he has a 94, i never really asked, i just said 92 to assume the worst. so its now a 1.6L DOHC to BP-T.

So my speedo question is answered.

But now we bought the engine today and noticed a couple of thing while taking the old one apart and comparing to the new one.

-The BP-T has a fifth spark wire like the B6-ME, but the B6-D has 4 leads from the disty.. I imagine i gotta go pick n pull some parts eh?

-Theres no MAF or VAF, whatever you guys call it, that come with it.

On this picture ive labeled some hoses 1, 2 and 3. ( not my picture/ engine! )
Image

Tube #1, I assume I take the old MAF/VAF stick on there and put a nice cone filter?

Tube #2,3, I assume it was meant to have some sort of intercooler in between them, so can I just merge them both together?

-Any vaccum hose routing diagrams that can be found online?

Well thats about all, we worked 4 hours on it the today, old engine/tranny is just about ready to come out, trying to get one stubborn fckn axle nut off, arghrrr!!

BTW, how can you tell between GTX and GTR models?

Thanks!

Uh, the filter goes before/on the "spinny thingy." The air must have a good filter on it before it gets to the turbo(K&N/AEM Dryflow). Pipe 3 is the compressor outlet. That needs an intercooler between it and the throotle booty.

Your air meter depends on the ecu (maybe stand alone?) you are going to be using. If you are using the stock bpt ecu.. probably a vaf.a

kk.

Well we did some progress today but we have a small question, can we put the BPT flywheel, clutch and pressure plate on the F series tranny?

The clutch disc from the bpt is a 22 spline and the f-series trans shaft is a 20 spline as is the clutch disc with that said u get the picture.. you should just get a g-series trans from a bp donor car along with the top trans mount and both axles and half shaft and the 3 bolts that bolt it to the block.

Ok that answers the clutch and pressure plate, but a flywheel is bolted on, so no spline counted involved there. Is it any lighter? Stronger? Would i get any advantages over the F series one? Or just f--- it?

thx

The f-series is a weaker trans than that of the g-series and a kia g-series is a bit beefier that than of the mazda version.

*EDIT* And for the G series, I wanted to answer you in the other post but I forgot. It will be an upgrade for later on, but for the moment, he needs his money so he can live happily for the next few weeks :p hehe

OK, so, we will bolt the BP-T flywheel to the F series. Sounds good?

u can't do that
