missing chunk of CV shaft

92 RS BP w/ F-series tranny 5speed
So I finished my BP swap, and took it out for a test drive. I was about to take off from a stop light and it made a chunk, and then would not move.
I jacked it up and looked under the tranny and located the problem: My CV shaft had disengaged from the tranny. I tried to put it back in and it just didn't feel like it wanted to stay in. I pulled it completely out of the tranny and noticed the circlip wasn't on it ... actually the groove for the circlip wasn't there at all. I was missing 1/2 inch off my CV.
I'm not sure if it fell out when my CV fell out or if it went all the way in. I stuck my finger in the tranny and went all the way back to the bar between the driver/passenger sides. Didn't feel anything bad in there.

My question is:
Is it possible for the 1/2" of CV shaft to get pushed in and fall into the tranny? Or is there just not enough room back there?

I'm worried about the chunk getting into my tranny and causing me grief. I'll be replacing the CV soon, but I don't want this one coming back and biting me in the a$$.

Well, now you have no trans fluid either, remember to address that :P

If you're using the stock transmission with the stock axles... I have no idea why this happened to you.

IF you're certain your CV axle is missing 1/2" or more, then there's no way in hell it'll fall into the tranny. However, if (as it's most likely) your CV broke right in the circlip groove (which is about 1/8"-3/16" from the end), there's a strong possibility it may be inside your tranny.
In any case, I'd open up the tranny, just for the extra peace of mind.

That's crazy. But I'm with the rest.. if you feel like it's in there, I'd open it to be sure.

I'd like to close this post saying that is was in there, it ran fine for 2 years with it in there (I was lazy and never checked). And it went out new years day 2011. Put a large hole in my bell housing and doused my clutch with gear oil.

I replaced the transmission almost a year ago. 1/19/2011
Though I'm having issues with this engine/tranny complete swap I just completed. I'll post later if it keeps bugging me.
