Bell Housing differences?

Post by Billcjr »

Hi all. I've recently picked up a 94 MX-3, 4 cyl, ATX. The tranny is bad, and while I'm still contemplating a BP engine and manual tranny swap, I'd like to get another ATX just to drive for a while. The problem is (and I've searched a good bit here without getting a good feel for what I'm running into) the bell housing on the ATX in my car does NOT match up with the trannies I've been finding in the junkyard (from Escorts, Kias, etc...from the years listed on the exchange lists I've found here). Everything looks to match up pretty well except the bell housing in my car is, for lack of a better way to describe it, about an inch or so "taller" along the top edge. The others seem to have a similar flare, but not nearly as high. The rest of the casing and switch plugs, etc seem to match up...but not the bell housing. From all I've read it seems the trannies on all the interchange lists SHOULD match up, but I'm not finding that. The only 2 junkyard cars I've found with the same bell housing were a Protege (94 I think, and very high miles) and a BP Ford Escort GT (94...and MTX...and wrecked pretty bad too near the tranny for my comfort). If I'm just missing something, my apologies for such a long winded question. If there's something about this years tranny that y'all can tell me (like for sure which other cars I should be looking for, or if it's NOT an F4EAT I was thinking it should be)...I'd appreciate it.
