Not sure about the mod part, but i had the 3-4sec starting issue until this week, I finally broke down(me not the car) and bought the TOT57171 disty which fixed the problem, urs is the TOT57271 which is the one i used to have.

The JDM ignition system uses an external ignitor and coil from the factory. So, you would see a 7th lead on the cap which would go to the coil. There is a way to make them work using an aftermarket coil and GM HEI ignition module. This is commonly referred to as the "HEI Mod".
What you have there is a standard issue A-spec distributor which is most likely the one that your MX-3 was born with. They often fail because the coil and ignitor are inside the distributor which gets very hot as it is bolted to the engine. That distributor can also be made to work using the HEI Mod, thought the wiring is slightly different. So when your internal coil and/or ignitor does crap out, that's what you should be searching for. It has been explained over and over...and over again. And then again...for the slow kids who didn't get it the first 3 times.

That looks like an obd2 disty. Its bigger than the k8 but its the same as far as having 6 ports. I tried it and it didnt work for me.

the 3 pin pulg is wired in a different order from year to year. It has all the right wires, they just don't match up to the position of the wires in your harness.

That disty is missing the cam position sensor, KF34, so it takes a couple of seconds to start cuz the ecu is looking for it and cant find it. The K834 looks identical but has the cam position sensor, I just went through this and have been dealing with it for a couple of years now. The one he has is for a 95 mx-3, the one he needs is for a 94-95 mx-3. As soon as I put the proper one one by car (k834 tot57171) the starting problem went away.
If it needed an external coil then it would never start.
Also if the 3 wire plug was different it would never start.
Ive gone through approx 6 disties in the last 3 months before i said f-it and paid $500 for the proper one i mentioned

So you're saying you had an OBD1 car with an OBD2 disty and it started even though "the ECU is looking for (the CPS) and can't find it"?
On cars which use one, the CPS is the trigger for the ignitor. A car whose ignition system uses the CPS to trigger the igniter will never start with a disty that does not have one. If it takes 3-4 seconds to start the disty is right for your car, but something is wrong with it.

Yes the car will start that way, it uses the cps to start it, however if cranking long enough it will pick up the crank position sensor and still start, but throws a cel code, and you run in limp mode cuz the timing wont advance or retard cuz it cant see the cam ps.
Seriously I installed the K834 TOT57171 disty on wednesday last week, from the KF43 TOT57271 disty, and all my starting issues went away. The car would start but EVERY time it would crank for about 4sec before firing and i had the according cel code, now it starts perfectly and no cel.

Yes you need to change the wires on the 3 pin plug, but i dont know which 2, and i couldnt get a straight answer from anyone so i bought the proper disty instead. Good luck
