I recently got a pair of rear armrest panels with grey (or are they supposed to be black?) fabric inserts. The fabric looks kinda faded so I want to spruce it up a bit before I put them in. Is there anything like a spray-on dye that would work with these?

Doesn't work very well...fabrics are stiff after and paint rubs off them, its not really a dye. Best advice is to get w/e you are getting done covered w/ another fabric. I did it with this, but am not happy w/ the way it turned out. It is really the only option though for a sunroof liner/edging strip as I think its too think to cover w/ something. The rest of the headliner I did w/ another fabric.

Get your panels recovered by a professional, you will be happy! The guy by me will do panels for cheap if you pay in cash! You could have your rears done for less than $100, might even be closer to $60...check places around you!

I would agree with romeo... just get it reupholstered! I've only heard semi-ok or bad results from spray on paint... on a headliner I saw you could wipe it off with your hand... and here's where Tunes67 experimented with the rear panels and seat - even he remarked that it's not ideal:

I was never really looking for paint, I'm looking for more of a dye. I don't need to change the colour, I just need to darken it a bit.

Dont use that stuff. I have used it, and it will not work like you think.

Its basically paint, which will make the fabric stiff. It may look good, but will eventually dust off and get on your clothes and in your car.

I have also removed the covers and tried to dye these things. I put scalding hot water in a barrel with salt and dye for SEVERAL WEEKS, and it did not hold.

Have them covered.

Ugh alright, I guess I'll just have to leave it then. I'm not looking to spend much more money on the interior, I still need to buy a few panels.

I used a product called RIT. It is a dye you mix with really hot water in a spray bottle and spray onto the fabric. Then you let it dry. Repeat until desired darkness. Dry. Pressure wash, the dry again and apply more if color fades from the pressure wash. Fabric still looks like new and has never rubbed onto clothing or anything else.

So it actually works properly? I've actually heard of RIT before, didn't know you could spray it. I haven't seen it in any stores before though.
