93 mx3 4 cyl-auto trans is junk-how hard is it to swap 5spd?

i have a 93 mx3 with 4 cylinder & auto trans that the transmission went out of a long time ago & im looking to fix it but i cant spend more than a couple hundred bucks-i can EASILY find a 5 speed trans for it-but with the exception of the obvious (installing clutch pedal & shifter)-what all is needed for this swap & how hard is it?

i figure:
different ecu
wiring harness modification
custom transmission mount

will the stock drive shafts work or will stock 5 speed drive shafts work? i can find one of these transmissions for $150, so besides that im only worried about the ecu-driveshafts-& the complexity of fabricating a trans mount. can someone PLEASE help me figure out what i need to do before i say screw it & have this thing smashed-because im getting really tired of looking at it sit & after all this time im fixing it or destroying it-i have too much money in it already. any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!

the tranny mounts are the same on both type transmission. you will need to change some of the cars wirering like for the Neutral safety switch and the back up lights. and you don't have to change the ECU.

I did the swap several years ago along with an engine swap.

See my journal-- has parts lists too.

Hey im new hear, but i had a question. so instead of starting a new thread i thought would just use this thread.

I have a 94 mx-3 auto trans 1.6 DOhc, iwould like to swap a manual Trans in.

After reading several threads i have scene that it can be done with very lil complication, but i have bn reading about using other trannys from other vehicles.

So my question would be would it be alot simplier to just use the 5-speed and other needed parrts from a 5-speed mx-3 itself rtaher than from another car?

it all comes down to what you have to work with. Check the yards, what they have is what you'll use

Ok gotcha.

My list should include:

5spd tranny
Wiring harness
Pilot bearing
Throwoutbearing
Shifter pedal assembly
Shifter boot

Anything else

Uh. Kinda..

clutch, flywheel... two very major and important parts.. shift linkage and shifter...

You don't really know what you're getting yourself into, do you?

Check the transmissions forum, there have been VERY recent threads with complete shopping lists, and even price approximations.

Okay. I'm only doing this because its the first super annoying thread I've read this morning.

The very first, and stickied tread in the TRANSMISSIONS forum:

http://www.mx-3.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=65792" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
In there it tells you what other cars have transmissions you can use.

Don't forget the clutch slave cyl, lines and the slave cyl that mounts to the firewall. There is a hole drilled out allready in the firewall and it just has a plate where the master would go. Also, the brake resevoir shares the same fluid as the clutch hydraulics. You don't need another wiring harness. The reverse light switch should still connect to the factory harness and you do have to jump the neutral safety switch on the auto trans harness. Read the post from Atlantamx3's swap.
