I must be doing somethign wrong

well today i adjusted my timing and tps by using this guide----> http://forums.probetalk.com/showthread.php?t=1701026318" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Its a great guide, "its so sticky it could be glue" lol My idle is perfect now but my timing is weird. I followed the directions, insert the pin in diag box, turn ignition on and start car. Adjust the idle then looses the disty and get the timing light ready. I adjusted the timing so that its directly on 10* BTDC tightened the disty then check the timing, still at 10* checked the bolts again and as well as the timing everyhting is perfect so i shut the car off then i remove the pin in the diag box. start the car again and check the timing and its off and its not at 10* its at like 15 or more. So i redid the procedure and when i resart the car its back to 15 or more degrees off.

Am i doing something wrong here or is it just me?

By the way its a 94 GS with klze and kl31 ecu. Maybe there is some special way to change the timing with the kl31 ecu's but im positive it should be the same procedure.

Ya it's pretty much it. Timing is an issue because the ECU won't let you adjust it so I just put the disty in the middle as the factory had and left it there. TPS I prefer this way as it's a little more accurate.

Connect ohmeter to 2 bottom pins (BR and BK/DB) and you should get continuity. If not, loosen 2 TPS retaining bolts and rotate until continuity has just barely been achieved. Semi tighten 2 TPS bolts.
Insert .006" (0.15mm) feeler gauge between the throttle stop screw and throttle lever. This should not break the continuity. If it does break continuity, slightly adjust TPS rotation again to regain the continuity. Insert the gauge in and out a few times to verify. (Note, it must be mentioned here that the throttle lever must be travelling the fullest extent possible to achieve a complete closure of the butterfly within the venturi. If it's believed that the idle stop screw is preventing the control arm from travelling it's maximum distance to a fully closed throttle then adjust the throttle stop screw via a 2.5mm allen key. If this was necessary, then the previous procedure will have to be started all over again).
After confirming continuity with 0.15mm feeler gauge, insert a .020" (.50mm) feeler gauge. This should just barely break continuity but completely. If not re-adjust TPS rotation again. Re-confirm by re-insrting feeler gauge.
In essence, continuity on initial connection to TPS.
Continuity with .15mm gauge inserted.
No continuity with .50mm gauge inserted.
Tighten down TPS retaining bolts.
Re-connect TPS connector.

Cheers

Note: For some of the ECUs you have to pull the jumper out before turning it off for the settings to be "remembered" -

Also dont apply throttle while checking timing -

Thanks for the replies. I understand how the tps works and i already adjusted it. Thanks for the hlp though.

For the timing, ive been doing everythign right but the computer just wont save that as the timing mark so ill just leave that alone. I tried again to set it and it just doesnt want to stick.

The ECU adjusts timing based on these sensors -

Make sure all of them are in good order

Make sure you are using the correct vaf for the ecu you are using.

ahhh i think i know why now. I havnt hooked up the second coolant temp sensor yet so my rad fan is always on. that may be why the timing is constantly being retarded to another state after i adjust it. I had a look and it seems as though its gunna be easier to tap in a new sensor than it is to switch a coolant neck.
