My BP engine swap Problems Please Help

Post by 94drumx3 »

Ok so i decided to do the 1.8L bp engine swap into my 1.6L 1994 Mazda mx3.
The bp engine came from a 1994 ford escort GT.
Taking the 1.6 out was a peice of cake. However in swapping engines the wiring harness wasn't anywhere near the same. The one from the 1.6 had like 4 sensors where the 1.8 has 2. Thankfully my friend who's helping knows a thing or two about this stuff and has helped out a LOT and tried his hand at rigging it all up! but even he's a little unsure if he got it right.
Also, when putting back in the passenger side main cv shaft the mount that mounts to the backside of the engine doesn't line up, its about an inch off to the side!!
Also, the 1.8 has a different exhaust manifold that doesn't fit directly into the downpipe from the 1.6 stock.
Did anyone else have these problems or is there something i'm just not seeing or doing right?

And i forgot to mention...the crank pully on the 1.8 isn't grooved for the belt like the alternator and timing pulleys are. it takes a V style belt or whatever its called.

BP swap is NOT plug and play for 94 mx3 DOHC - you will have to use a BP harness from a protege or 92-93 mx3 harness (SOHC) with some modifications - otherwise it will be a wiring nightmare like you described. There is also a different solution to the halfshaft/axle problem. A simple search would have given you all these info....

i've tried searches but they always seem to come up with a bajillion different posts simply cause half the "terms" entered into the search are dropped so the only words looked up are "shaft" or "mount" which doesn't really help any.

pulley issues: try using bp pulleys instead of b6 pulleys that might help

wiring: like he said you either want a protege harness or 92-93 harness

jackshaft: the engine is bigger so obvious you can't use all the same parts such as axles... get a jackshart meant for the engine your are using..

and lastly RESEARCH!!! I did a lot of research on my swap before i started it and it helped a lot... i still ask questions but i'm running into things no one dealt with before. try the FAQ section for 4 cyl engines and the bp swap guide sticky that is just a thread or two above this one i am suprised you missed that one
