any particular reason some smiley's have a white outline? it really disturbs me...

Well no special reason except they are meant to be used on a light colour background.

When I modified the forums to use the black background, I was too lazy to edit each smiley properly. Anyone with minimal graphic skills and an hour of time to donate to the site, feel free to edit them and send them my way. I'll replace the current ones with the fixed ones.

Explanation enough?
