I've never seen a car with an actual gasket between the engine and the transmission. Metal on metal is normally the case. I haven't had my V6 out yet, but I know that on my I4 there was nothing between the two.

nothing on my v6 engines, wouldn't see much point, not like there's oil to be kept in! Although metal on metal still keeps the water out, torque to spec

You have a rear main seal, not a seal between housings.

There's a metal gasket between engine block and transmission cover (at least on my V6 MX3). Starter is mounted to tranny cover, so the gasket is not intended to hold it in place. There is a gasket and I had in my hands when I removed the tranny. :)
