MAF meter application

Hi, I just bought a 1992 MX3, There seems to be a problem with the Mass Air Flow meter on it though. When you really push on the gas it almost wants to stall out but if you gently accelerate it works fine. This problem however is really annoying in city driving conditions because gaps I would usually be able to make, I no longer can. Also the reason I bought the car is because of the mileage they are supposed to get but right now I am getting something around 13-16MPG. I priced out a new MAF meter and they range from $400 (lordco) to $1,600 (Mazda). So I am thinking about used. I have recently found a 1996 MX3 parts car with only 130,000kms on it and was wondering if the two cars have this same part in common. I have been able to find out that the 1995 has the same part but haven't found any info on the 1996. Does anyone know if they share the same part and also other areas that I should be looking for a problem.

If you are in North America - the 92-93 models and 94-96 models have different engines and hence different MAFs.

Also if your MAF is bad - more than likely the check engine light will be on.....

Seems like you have a vaccum leak - look for cracks or tears in the rubber intake tube that runs from the MAF to the throttle body...
