Ok I know I already asked this, I dont want a how to on how to do it, cause my friends and I this is our first really mechanical thing we have really done this big. So umm how much should I be looking to spend to have someone hone my cylinders for me? Thanks ahead of time guys

Well, that depends a lot on how much wear is in the cylinders. If you can feel a ridge at the top of the cylinder, then you will have to pay $150 to get it bored(honed) and probably another $50 for shop supplies and washing and environmental.

If it only needs a quick hone because there isn't very much wear(no ridge) then it will be about
$30 plus the other charges.

I work at a machine shop, so that's why I know how much it will cost.

cheers

is that price for just 1 cylinder or all 4 also, should I worry about getting new piston rings? Another thing how long does it usually take andwill it be cheaper considering I already have the block out?

Oh boy, you weren't kidding when you said this was your first major mechanical project :)

Well, the charges were for all 4 cylinders.

and yes, you will need new piston rings.

when you overbore, the rings will be too small for the cylinders.

when you hone, you need new rings because they have to seat on the new cylinders.

cheers

Well, I would see if you can get away with the stock bore size, and not need an overbore.....

I would buy the rings after you get the machine work done.

you may need new pistons too...

if you get the bores overbored, the pistons will be too small :)

if you can get away with using the stock bores, then you will be ok.

lets f---in hope I can cause how much are pistons? plus labor haha. Se7en would you recommend I go for this considering my head, I dont think its really getting rebuilt just the new valves cause they were bent, you think I should do this/ is it going to be worth the cost

If you have to take the head off anyway, you should be able to see the condition of the cylinder walls. If they still have hone marks, and no scrapes or ridges, you should be okay.

nothing really seems like its in bad condition in the engine, the pistons are a little dirty but, theres no obvious scratches or anything, hence I wouldnt of bought the motor, so I think Ill be ok

scrape off the carbon at the top of the cylinder, and see if you can catch your fingernail on the ledge at the top of the cylinder.

if you can ...even a little bit, you will need new pistons usually.

good luck.

What should I use to scrape the carbon off?
