Sorry guys, I know you're all sick of this, but I can't work out what this engine is...

KL31-1A1 heads with kl01 cams

I notice they have the large intake HLAs 33mm, and 30?mm exhaust.

Haven't got looking at the pistons yet... Gotta strip it down as water got in :(
Can't work out whether it's a late millenia or what? Thought is was a proper kl31 cammed straight neck, then found kl01 cams :O

So the motor you got was a straight neck one or curve neck?

Curve neck = kl01 cams
Straight neck = kl31 cams

If you got a straight neck with kl01 cams it is possible, jsut unlikely. As long as you have kl31-1a1 heads though, that is a good thing.

Well the guy who got it first got it with the straight neck... Which is what threw me off with it having kl01 cams!

do the kl31-1a1 have the weak retainer problem? Just deciding to interprep valve spring and kl-03 retainers or not to bother!

Thanks for reply ;)

Yea, the kl31 1a1 heads have a tendency to drop valves. The KL01 cams are alright, if you can find a set of kl31's then bonus, but the car is still gonna be fast!

For as many ZE that are out there, there isn't really that many instances of dropped vales. Broken retainers are really only a concern forthose who abuse (over-rev) their motors. However, there are much less reports of dropping valves on KL01 ZE's, it's theorised that they have stronger retainers than their KL31 counterparts, but it couldn't hurt to upgrade them either.

As previously mentioned, a KL01 cammed ZE is typical of it's curved-neck varient, while the KL31 cams are usually in the straight-neck ZE. It's extremely rare, but there are a few instances of 01 cams in a straight neck. It's quite possible that the intake manifolds have been swapped, but you never know.

I'm happy to pay $400 for the comfort of reliability :) Plus I've started taking the heads off anyway so now is the time to do it right! I guess I'm one of those instances then, who knows what the japs get up to with these engines :D

Yea I expected to find kl31, but alas kl01 in a supposedly "true" straight neck ze. Now it's time to pray the water that dumped out my one cylinder hasn't rusted my piston, rings etc...(water got in it whilst in past the plugs in storage :()
thanks again guys
