I'm getting my klze delivered soon enough and of course want it to be reliable. Perhaps one of the biggest problems I've noticed is failing retainers leading to dropped valves. I've read through hours of stuff mainly on probetalk.

So can anyone say with confidence is it the burred edges of the springs stressing the retainers that cause the drop or are the retainers weak anyway?

If it's the burred edges - can these just be DIY smoothed down and the stock retainers left as is?

Maybe I'm just being paranoid but I'm just weighing up the value of headwork

From what I understand is that it is the retainers that are weak. The springs could use an upgrade also. Springs and retainers are not very expensive, its when you do other things to the heads that is when the money really starts to pile up.

Yeah its the retainers.... you can get a set of DE retainers for cheap.. just search the board.

I got the ferrea titanium springs and retainers, probably the best money to ensure you dont break a retainer and drop a valve

The best but also the most expensive, partly because you have to use their springs with their retainers.

yep, but no chance of issues in the future, good for 1000000km

if your engine has hi miles it is a god idea to change out those valve springs.

Not the retainers, not the springs, the answer is ZE

Ok so how is the ze the problem if it's not the springs or retainers? What is so different between the ze and de that would pose a problem for dropping valves?

From what I can gather, the ZE retainers on the intake are a poor build. The springs have been said to have burred edges further digging into the weak retainers - which is why I asked. So it seems the retainers are the real problem, they crack, the valve drops, game over. I'll probably be getting an interprep set myself. I reckon he was just having a wee joke

does interprep make full head kits for ze's? i didnt know that

The springs and the retainers on the ZE intake sidea re weaker than DE. The springs themselves don't hold as much pressure as the DE. the retainer is also not uite as thick, therefore its not as strong. I have had them both apart and in my hands and I can visually tell. This topic has been covered many times. If you look in the V6 FAQ section there is a couple write ups on this both with pictures and there posted by BabyBlueMX3
