I went to the wreckers and got the pedals, shifter and tranny mounts and axles and everything else I could unbolt from the car ;from a 93 probe gt(my Mx-3 is a 1992). will the axles work with my car? it was automatic before.

thanks

did you get the tranny off the probe GT also? or are you using an mx-3 manual tranny in your atx to mtx swap?

ya, I got the tranny from the probe also.

will the probe axels work? they seem to be a different part number, but the could be on the tranny side.

Pretty sure the tranny is not going to work, i think bell housing bolts are diff.

the MTX from the ford probe gt will fit the v6 motor, as they are the exact same transmission. Though the axles from the probe will not work as they are longer

From what I understand, the axle shafts are specific to the MX-3. Try http://www.car-part.com to find junkyards that may have them. I was lucky enough to find a GS MTX donor car at my local U-pull-it yard.

okay, here's my problem with those axles.

I pulled the axles from the probe, and also from my mx-3.

they look pretty close to the same length, but the probe ones have 28 spline on both ends and the mx-3 axles are 26 spline on both ends.

what do I do for axles??? the tranny has 28 spline and the mx-3 axles are 26 spline.

anyone run into this before?

edit: can I just mate the mx-3 outer joints to the probe inner joints?
do the insides match up?

you need a set of mtx axles for the mx3 gs

okay, I solved it

okay, I solved my problem.

here is the down low on what axles and intermediate shafts a person needs:

drivers side has to be from an mx-3 and has to be the mtx one.

passenger side:

(here is the problem I was having.)

the cv joint unbolts from the engine, and is quite long for a cv joint.
it can be separated at the bolt-bracket if you just hammer on it with a mallet or something like that(it doesn't look like it comes apart, but it does)

now, the tranny side is called the intermediate shaft, and it is the same for all kl series MTX trannys.(probe gt, 626, mx6, mx3, etc)

the outer shaft is the same for both mtx and atx mx-3's.(for sure, I double checked with new ones)

also, the reason that the probe, mx6,626,etc axles won't work is that the hub side of the axle has 28 splines instead of 26 like on the mx-3.

that is all you need.

I think that this should be amended to the "atx to mtx" FAQ I think. It sure would have been nice to have read it before I bought all those axles ;)

I've tried Mx-6/probe alxes on the Mx-3. They look almost the same. But infact they are about two inches longer when there on. Thus, not leaving any room for the boot to move. Too tight.

Buy some from a place like Autozone, somewhere where there lifetime warranty. That will save you the time looking for used ones.

ya, they are longer, and also, the outer joint (on the hub) is 28 spline instead of 26 like the mx-3 axles.

I don't know of any "upgraded" axles for MX-3s, but as was said above, just get them from a place like Autozone. They have a lifetime warranty so if you break them you get new ones for free.

I can verify that the passenger side shafts are indeed the same for ATX and MTX. The one I got from the junkyard with the MTX was clicking so today I put the one from the ATX back in and it fits perfect.

If you don't mind spending the money http://www.driveshaftshop.com sells upgraded ones and they are great with their warranty. I tore one up at the track and it was long past warranty and they repaired it for free. I had to have them make me a custom set to fit the jspec lsd trans.
good luck
