Is it the syncro?

Had to get my tranny replaced. Long story, don't ask. Got a new "used" tranny, and 3rd gear grinds when going in. All other gears are fine.

Now, I'm not sure how syncros work, but when I double-clutch it goes smooth from 2nd to 3rd, yet when downshifting from 4th to 3rd double-clutching doesn't help - still grinds like a mofo. WTF?

It may or may NOT be the synchros. Either way, the trans needs to be taken apart and inspected for bearing and gear wear.

Most likely is the synchro....3rd is common on these trannies.

I'd like to see the 3rd synchro then...

Could be shift linkage, shift rail, shift forks, bad motor mount. Thats the thing about gear clash, it can be a number of things.

If it were any of those, wouldn't that result in all gears shifting bad?

The 5 speed tranny has 3 forks and 3 rails. So not necessarily.

Thats fine with me B. What was it doing before you took it out?? Was it grinding in 3rd or any other gear??

It seems like the tranny is seeping a bit of oil as well. I'm not a 100% sure, but there's a little drip puddle under what I imagine would be the transmission oil seal. Hmm... Probably not the entire reason it's grinding, but I imagine it's a contributing factor. Could it be?

You know, I thought I needed a new tranny, my 3rd gear started to grind less than a year after my ZE swap, i thought that maybe the wheelhop from dragging was killing it, eventually 5th started to grind a bit as of this year and 3rd I was double clutching it if i felt like being nice on the tranny. My slave cylinder died on my a few months ago (of course, on a trip back home, thank got i wasn't too far), got it replaced, and you know what, my gears didn't grind anymore...For like 2-3 years I had that probably slowly creaping up on me, thought the tranny was getting worse, in the end, it really was the slave cylinder...I would of gone racing soon after if i didn't screw up 4th when i got stuck when my slave died..oh well, good excuse as any to get my new trans done and in :D Although the trans is ready to be put back together and put in the car, I was planning on putting in a new slave (and possible master) when I put in the new trans, guess I don't need to do that anymore.
