which cat do i need

Post by jamesmx3 »

took a look at the underside of the car the other day and got a nasty shock, the front pipes of exhaust were the rusties things i've ever seen. I was thinking as the back is stainless, i would get the s/s probe header and down pipe setup from ebay.

my problem is i dont know which cat to get to mate up with probe header and the s/s back section? do i get a probe one or an mx3 one. i cant find a street legal high flow cat for the 1996 mx3 need halp with that too if thats the one i need.

thanks guys

I wouldn't worry too much about things mating up. A muffler shop can do wonders with a MIG welder and a cutting torch. I was skeptical at first too, but was pleasantly surprised.

If you don't want pipes welded, so that you can easily remove pieces of the exhaust in the future, have flanges welded on, then there will be no mating issues.

which is closest though, i have a mate who is quite good with the TIG, but he is lazy and wants me to have everything sorted so he only needs to weld, not cut and shape!

you'll probably only find high flow cat's that are weld-in. No flanges.
That's what I had to purchase, I went with a magnaflow hi flow. Was like 70 bucks shipped. But it's just pipe at the ends, so you have to weld it in.
I don't think you'll find much of an other option.

I got mine from autopartswarehouse.com

got the header today, it came with a 2-1 downpipe and flex joint and a bit more, it looks as though i have been lucky, i bought a decat pipe a couple of months ago thinking it was for the mx3 but infact it was a probe one. anywho, looking at it today i found that if i cut 65mm from each end of the probe cat, and weld the flanges back on it should all bolt up!! I also read that the mounting bars need to be turned round but mine dont, they are the right way. i have a 1998 uk model maybe they changed it towards the end of production, but its better than i thought :D !!
