alright well im new to these boards im usually on probetalk.com but anyways my friends recently bought a 1995 mx-3 5speed. the guy said the car was sitting since octobor. well we have some problems with it when you give it gas somtimes it will die and somtimes it wont, but it will always run rough when you start to give it gas to go. i was thinking that mayb becasue its been sitting the gas is old so i was goign to burn all of the gas and change the fuel filter and put a fresh tank of gas in with a new fuel filter. could this be my problem? can anyone help?

my '85 pickup sat in the yard for 8 YEARS, then my dad gave it to me to drive.
All it needed was a new battery and air in the tires.
It cranked right up.

I doubt the fuel LINE has varnished fuel or such in it to cause it to idle rough.
Time really doesn't clog filters, either.

It sounds more like the fuel switch/relay, or the fuel pump itself causing it to do such.

Throw some injector cleaner and try to run it hot, see if you can burn out any possible residue. Make sure to change the oil if it's sat that long unattended, though.

yea we did change the oil and filter the other day but it seems it burns oil if you drive the car hard. what kind of injector cleaner should i use? how much is a new fuel pump and isnt it hard to do

so thats the only help i can get?

is ther a way to check the fuel pump?

I'll also add that rough idle is most often caused by vacuum leaks. If you have the stock flex tube from the air box to the throttle body.. check it for cracks in between the flexible ribs.

One other thing of note. Your issue has been covered a billion times.. if you use the search function.. you will be able to check how other people resolved their similar issue(s). This is probably part of the reason that few people have responded. There's a search button at the top of EVERY page in this forum, you can't get away from it.

As Tunes said, most common cause is vacuum leak. I had this issue a couple months ago. I knew that my air intake hose was cracked, so I taped it up with some electrical tape. Well, after about five minutes of driving, the intake air had ripped the hose apart. As this air enters the throttle body through a tiny crack, or in my case, a huge rip, it bypasses the MAF (Mass Airflow Sensor). This causes the ecu to believe there is no air going to the engine.

When my intake hose was cracked, the car ran REALLY rough, and I had a hard time keeping it running to get to the auto-wrecker.

alright well i found it but idk what to type in can somone please help me, also how do you check the fuel pump to make sure its ok? and do you absolutly have to drop the tank to get to it?


ill look more at the intake tomrrow but can somone please jeu help me out and give me anwsers not jsut tell me to search


PLEASE

First siphon off the old gas (if theres any left) - gas additives separate and congeal when its left for a while - if you try to burn it off it might gum up a lot of stuff.

For the next few fillups, add fuel system treatment (with injector cleaner stuff & probably water remover stuff too).

Change fuel filter (there are two - one in the engine bay, one in the fuel tank).

Check for vacuum leaks around the intake tube - spray wd-40 or carb cleaner around the intake tube while the engineis idling - if the odle changes when you spray there is a leak near that spot.

Check/clean all the ground points and add more ground wires. Clean battery terminals too.

Check alternator - if you can take it out some parts store will check it for free.

And most importantly - search the forum - i spent 2 weeks reading up the forum before posting - believe me there are 1000s of posts just dealing with your same issue - if you put idle problems or idle issues or something like that in the search box you will see what i mean. Make sure you select "search for all words" before doing search.

butt see the idle isnt all that bad thats not really my problem its that when i give it gas it wants to die and somtimes it will...its like you have to give it gas very slowly and then it will go fine

hes basically telling me he knows he jsut want tell me what, look idk how to use the search function what am i supose to put in it? its a rough idle sorta, but thats not even the problem the car wants to die when you give it gas, and i put that in the search function and come up with nothing

At this point I have come to the conclusion that you are either a troll or a retard. Sorry if thats too blunt for you.. but your just here whining rather than trying to learn. Subject: Large Hesitation on throttle


We've just got a '95 MX-3. It's been setting for a while, since october.
It has XXX,XXX miles on the original engine, "B6 DOHC" and since we've got it, we've given it a complete tune up.
Work to date:
Changed oil/spark plugs
tested catalytic converter
made love in the back seat
checked for vacuum leaks
flushed the coolant
tested the O2 sensor.
Run injector cleaner, flushed the fuel out of the system
PULLED THE ECU CODES
PULLED THE CODES
PULL THE DAMN CODES

The car also burns oil, probably 1 quart every XXX miles, It does/doesn't smoke on idle, but I don't know if that's related

the ECU is/isn't flashing ## code, which means blah blah blah. I've looked into that issue, but I don't know exactly what I should be

The car idles kinda rough, and the RPMS bounce between X K and X.X K

I'm not sure what other measures I should take now. Anyone else have any ideas?
