Transmission Help

Heres my problem...I have a 95 MX-3 dohc 1.6L automatic. It wont shift out of second gear. it will go from first to second no problem. but when it tries to shift into third it acts like it shifts into neutral instead. i was told that it was a bad t.c.u. but im starting to wonder if i actually have a shot transmission. also it makes a noise in the front end, sounds to me like a loose heat shield. but sine i have this other problem im starting to wonder if its actually the transmission making noise. help me please.

Have you checked your ATF level? and what color is it? The color will tell you a lot about what is going on inside the tranny. Have you checked the ECU for transmission codes? You might see a Code 61 for the 2nd-3rd gear shift solenoid.
