newer vs older BP

I have a 94 with lots of miles, i figured i would get a bp core from a junkyard and rebuild it before sticking it into my mx3. i read that it is fairly easy to install a newer BP, but i have found them hard to find.

What are the differences between newer and older BP motors?

If the wiring/ecu for the newer bp is more compatible with the 94 mx3 could i just get a an older bp and use eather the mx3 wiring or wait untill a newer bp appears in the junkyard and grab its wiring, but in the mean time work on rebuilding the older bp.

a good writeup froma 94+mx3 to a new gen bp. wiring is gonna be a problem but the new gen will be easier then a old gen bp.

92-98 BP's reguardless if there where in a Protege LX/GT, 2nd gen protege ES, Escort, 94-98 Miata these are all the same BP. same bottom end same head. 90-early 92 are a short/small nose crank.

I hear about the newer BP u guys talk about. i think the 99-03 mazda miata came with the newer version on the aging BP. called the 4ws some where along that term.

to be truthfull the older BP bottom end are a lot stouter than the 99 + BP bottom ends. reason why i say that i've seen a few 99+ BP under boost crack pistons and these are stock bottoms with full engine management systems doing this. no its not bad tuning. TRP ric is very good tuner.

I have 6,000 miles on my 93 stock internal BP-DE @18psi. (my signuare has my mods) Remember im not at 18psi 24/7 if im on vacum most of my daily driving.

now the 99 head flows better than older BP head. thats a mod i do but its is a good bit of modifcation to do. since i'll have to do a custom intake manifold in FWD form. remember 99+ head was on a miata.

Protege LX/GT, Escort, 94-98 Miata these are all the same BP as well as exhaust/intake bolt pattern. miata head will have to be modified water neck and caping off the other end on a miata head. things like that. theres on info on the 4cly faq.

I've used a 94 miata BP in my MX-3 i just had to modify lil things to make in work in fwd form.

thats what i could think off and any ?'s i be happy to answer. and if im wrong on my info don't be dumb by acting smart. I have help built some of the fastest BOOSTED BP on the road. mainly miata, in SA TX and through out the US. and my very own BOOSTED BP MX-3.

Thanks for the info, but what about wiring/ecu? I have seen that post with the wrightup for a newer bp, but are there any differances between useing the wiring from a 95+ protege vs a 90-94 in a 94 mx3

I haven't had the chance to work on a 94 MX-3 BP swap my best bet is to swap all the wiring BS to that of a 92-93 mx-3 where the bp swap is as simple as plug & play.

In my 92 V6 MX-3 converstion to 4cly i bypassed so much factory wiring BS by installing a standalone system.

there are 3 different BP i belive

the old gen 92-94
2nd gen 95-98
new gen 99+

the 2nd gen have VICS, unlike the 1st, and also has OBDII, however the old gen (plug and play to SOHC MX-3) have oil squirters in the block.

so theoretically, you want a 1st gen block, new gen head, and a 2nd gen intake manifold.

i could be wrong, i have been wrong before

1st gen BP are 89-98 regaurdless of what mazda and non mazda they come from they all have oil squirter and are the same with minor differences. the 95-98 protege ES is a non performance version of the BP but still a 1st gen BP

2nd gen BP known as a BP-4W is found in the 99-00 and mazdaspeed miata 04-05. now thats a modified BP

3rd gen BP known as the BP-Z3 found in the 01-05 mazda miata's thats another modified version of the BP-4W. but that BP has that POS Variable Tumble Control System. no more vics but VVTI yeah. a hold back under boost in some of the boosted miata i seen it on.

as for VICS on my boosted BP I don't have it at all just another factory BS i removed. thank you custom INAKE manifold. I still make power. I don't miss it at all.

Good little write up there. What kind of things did you have to change on the Miata BP? you keep the Miata ignition?

I dont think i will find a 99+ miata head at a junkyard to easily.

Please let me know if i am missing something in my parts list:

95-98 protege ecu/wiring/intake/distributer
91-94 block/head for the oil squirters and i read somewhere that the 95-98 heads have less aggressive cams.

my current mx3's transmission/flywheel/afm
new clutch water pump timing belt.
will i need a different exhaust manifold or can i use mx3's exhaust manifold for now?
