rattle sound at 3500 revs?

Hi guys , think i need oil change as sounding a bit tappety.Its a standard v6.Im more worrind as ive got a knocking at 3500 revs.Its not a deep knocking. more like a rattle. Any ideas guys?

Might not be the valvetrain. Worn alternator bearings can also produce a nasty rattle at mid rpms. Also, a loose heat shield around the exhaust manifolds or forward part of the exhaust system can rattle at a certain rpm range and sound as if the noise is from the engine. Get a friend to rev the engine to replicate the sound while you inspect from the engine bay to isolate it further. After that, if you still think it's the valvetrain, use a mech's stethescope (~15-20 USD) available at most any autoparts place. That will help pinpoint the engine area where the noise is coming from. Post back with your findings and any Q's.

Oh, and change the oil as a matter of course if it's due for one. Never hurts... g/l
