randomly, my fuel gauge says 0 and my car wont start.

ok so, yesterday this started happening.

i would sit in my car, turn the ignition but the engine wont pick up from the starter. then, i look and see that my fuel gauge is reporting absolutely no fuel. the needle is all the way down. so then i try turning it over, just to see if it would work, and it doesnt. so i get out of my car, wait a minute, then get in and try and it works again. and the fuel gauge came back up.

this also happened this morning.

what i am thinkin is that the fuel tank meter is broke, thus telling the computer that i have no fuel, thus telling the injectors to not inject????? (and remember this is all just a stab in the dark, i really dont have too much a clue as to how the computer works)

any help would be great. thanks

Dont know what year you have - but even on my half obd2 BP - the computer doesnt get any input from the fuel gauge/sensor.

The fuel gauge problem sounds like you might have some other electrical problem(s).

How old is the battery? and how good is the alternator? Any corrosion on the terminals?

Agreed that it sounds like a battery problem. As ariesdude noted, check the battery and check your battery terminals, as they may be in need for a cleaning.

Good luck.

the battery is new, about 3 months old.

its starting to do it again, so i cleaned up the terminals with baking soda. although, the terminals were pretty clean as they were.

it still wont start when i turn the key.

check the starter & see if you have gas

There is a connector under the backseat that connects to the fuel pump and fuel level sensor - if something is wrong with that connector the pump and gauge wont work. No pump means no gas and no go. Check the connector for loose connections, corrosion etc...

when you're experiencing the problem will the motor turn over and not just start. Or when you turn the key nothing happens, not even a clicking sound?

maybe you really don't have fuel?

i know i have gas because i just added about 2 gallons via a container,

and i do hear the clicking sound and the 'rrrruuu rrruu rrru rrrruuu' of the engine turning over.

but the engine doesnt want to start.

i will attempt to check under the seat for the connectors. thanks

Also check the fuel pump relay next to the ECU and make sure its plugged in tight as well.

happened again.

this morning, from 1230 to 430 i was trying to start it, and it never worked. 430 comes, then my friend tries it and it works.

i have no idea what could be going on. i looked at all the wires, and they all seem to be pretty secure in there. i couldnt find the ecu, though. i dont know what a 'kick panel' is or whatnot.

see, what happens is, is that he sits down on the chair, then all of a sudden, the fuel gauge just goes up. without him even turning the key. he just sits down, then boom. it works.

I had a fuel pump relay issue in my 85 Nissan... it'd randomly stop working and die on the highway, but it was located in a spot on the passenger side where I could reach over and BAM! hit it nice and hard and it'd turn back on :D

... then put put putt! it'd kick back in and go! Just not very fast....

sounds like a faulty starter relay to me

I think either your gas tank float dropped or you are having a fuel pump issue.

Something to check also is your fuel filter.
