engine trouble

after the car has been running for awhile it will start to smoke. the temp gauge reads normal still. and then the other day i was going down my street at about 15mph and my rpms went to zero but the car didnt shut off. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks

If the car was still in gear and the RPMs are reading zero while driving, then there's something wrong with the tach/it's connections/sensor.

If the car starts smoking after it warms up, but not cold, it may be caused by the piston and cylinder walls heating and expanding at different rates. Does the car behave in the same manner both with load (driving) and without (at stand still)? Have you checked the plugs and compression?
