Speedometer/mileage gauge stop working

I was driving home from work and I was speeding.When I shifted down from 5 to fourth to pass a car in front of me I notice my speedometer stop working. My buddy told me I probably pulled a cable that caused the problem. Can anyone tell me what could of cause this problem. I have a 93 rs with 213,000 miles

if its 93 or older i would consider getting a new speed cable if it broke.
