There are numerous collaborations between the JDM and USDM market which include car sharing. That is to say that the base platform on certain JDM cars were shared with a USDM counterpart. The MX6 and the Probe GT - same engine, powertrain, and I believe suspension. The Mazda Tribute and it's Ford SUV counterpart. The Mazda pick up was also shared with Ford. Toyota also did this with USDM.

Nowadays, there's a significant Ford in Mazda vehicles, but back then, Ford just owned stake in Mazda and didn't really had controlling power in Mazda. Although there are common platforms between our Mx-3 and Ford Vehicles, I wouldn't be surprised if there is almost, if not, no Ford components in our Mx-3's. Back then, Ford was mostly just rebadging Mazda vehicles, or just changed the interior and exterior styling. But the Mazda made vehicles up until the late '90, should be pretty much 100% Mazda, they just shared those parts with Ford.

Remember too that Ford owns, Jaguar, Austin Martin, Volvo and Land Rover, which are very respectible vehicles as well.

These days there is a significant amount of Volvo in Mazdas as well. The older models also had parts from Mitsubishi, Nissan and Suzuki as well. In other markets the Familia/323/Protege was sold with a nissan SR18-DE

On the other hand you will find Mazda based content in some of the new Jaguar such as the 3.0L V-6 which is loosely based on the Mazda K serie engines.

You forgot to mention all the Car built on the BG 323 Chassis

Mazda - BG and BH 323 & Protege, 1 gen Lantis/ Astina/ 323F, MX-3
Ford - Escort/ Laser/ Lynx. Merc. Tracer
Kia - Sephia

Mechanically these cars are all the same. The only real exception to this is the Ford ZX-2. The front half is Mazda but the rear has been redesigned to be beefier that the original Mazda design. Although most say the tranny is Mazda G MTX, It seems to be more like a Ford MTX-IV which is a beefier up version of the G (No it won't bolt to a Mazda engine.)

If you really want to slam their mouths shut.. you could always point out that the K series engine design was done by a gentleman working for porsche. I cant remember if he was working for porsche before or after designing the engine.. but either way.. its more impressive than ford ;)

Did you know the Chevorlet cavalier is rebadged as a toyota cavalier in Japan?

Almost all major car companies work with each other in some shape, form, or fashon.

The Toyota Cavalier was one of the best selling toyota products at the time in Japan. There were more performance products from that Cav. over there that there was over here as well. I know a few guys that JDM there Cavaliers back about 5-6 years ago and had people laugh at them at show when they pull up with Toyota emblems on the hood and trunk.

BTW the HLA in the DOHC engines was Mitsubishi's contribution to the design along with the front brakes.
