how good is the 90-92 mx6?

im thinking of asking this guy to trade me my sohc mx3 for his sohc mx6, does that sound like a good idea? i just put a new clutch in mine, new tires, high torque synth oil and that.

the reason i want it is for speed difference and availability in parts, wich im not sure about.

I like the mx3 better... I think it has better sport car potential than the mx6, as imo it outhandles an mx6, and also is much lighter than one. Stock vs stock maybe the mx6 is better though. MX6's are great cars, I just think it would be better to stick with the mx3 and upgrade it if you're looking for a quick sports car.

the reason i want the mx6 is its only 100 more pounds its 110 instead of 88 hp there is a direct bolt on turbo from the gt models and this one has fresh paint.

if it's the MX6 that i'm thinking of, i wouldn't bother, they have a terrible chassis, and the turbo versions made it worse :shock: although the 4WS models calmed down the torque steer a bit. Might be okay in a straight (ish!) line

Parents have a 1990 626, basically the same car as the 88-92 Mx6 and Probes. It's been a very reliable car, but parts are getting hard to find. Turbo versions made 145hp and 190tq. It's the same 2.2L 4cyl as in the mazda pickups. They have a pretty poor turning radius, but 4WS apparently made up for that, but because of their age, 4WS tends to be broken and parts are almost impossible to find to fix. One thing as well that was available was the selectable suspension. I'm not sure what what did (the 626 doesn't have any of the above options), nor on it's durability. It's a good car, but past it's time.

this is just a regular le that i was going to update to slap the turbo on, and not worry about 4ws. but it does have a fresh coat of paint and is in pretty nice condition, needs a vc gasket

This is kinda a weird thread.. before I bought my RS.. I was actually looking for a MX-6 when I came across my MX-3. Now when I look on my local craigslist.. I see MX-6's from 88-96 all the time (I really like the look of the 93+ with the DE engine in them) thing is.. people are selling them left and right.. yet I rarely see that many MX-3's for sale on there.. I wonder why that is? ;)

people like the sporty look, i like the look of like the escort, the protege dx and the older mx6 i dont know what it is, and i feel ripped off cuz my mx3 is so sloooooow. and the mx6 just getting it turbod is a million times easier then a sohc mx3

It is not as simple as slapping a OEM turbo manifold to convert this engine to a turbo or even swapping in the F2T. There are enough differences under the hood that you will probably require a MX6-GT donor car for a lot of parts you wouldn't think you would need to fit the turbo. In reality converting a non turbo MX-6 and a MX-3 SOHC will require about the same amount of work.

Don't let the HP numbers fool you. A N/A 2.2L MX-6 is not any faster that a SOHC MX-3 and I know from experience that it is slower that a stock 323 Hatch back of the same year.

Here are the advertized factory number for several Mazda models in '92

MX-6 SE (mtx) 0-100km = 10.6sec 400m 17.6sec
626 SE (mtx) 0-100km = 10.5sec 400m 17.5sec
Protege SE (mtx) 0-100km = 10.0sec 400m 16.8sec
MX-3 RS (mtx) 0-100km = 10.9sec 400m 17.8sec
323 SE (mtx) 0-100km = 10.5sec 400m 17.4sec

For reference here are the numbers for a '92 Ford Probe GL (mtx)
0-100km = 11.6sec 400m 18.2sec. The MX-6 and Probe were built on the same assy line and have the same engines, trannies and have almost weight. The 626 SE are slightly lighter than the MX-6 SE. The Canadian 323LX have the bigger 1.8L SOHC and are slightly faster that the Protege. The Canadian '90-91 Protege GT and all the US Protege LX have the 1.8 DOHC. 0-100km = 8.7sec 400m 16.7sec which is slightly faster that a MX-3GS
