1.6 Catalytic Converter(s)?

On the '94 four-banger are we looking at 2 cat converters? I've gone through the online shop manual and on the '95 there is something called a "warm-up three way catalytic converter" right below the exaust manifold. Then you've got some pipe and the cat that looks like a cat, then more pipe, the silencer, and finally the muffler. The clowns at M******* Mufflers are telling me that both cats have failed and they have no idea where to get a new "warm-up cat"

Is the "warm-up" cat really a catalytic converter or what?

And, if it is....any idea where I can get a new one? I've been looking and the second one is no big deal, but the warm-up cat is a ghost.

Any help will be greatly appreciated; I want to get another couple hundred thousand out of the old black roach.

Cat needs high temperature to work efficiently - At cold startup the cats are not warmed up so they just let emissions through. The warm up cat warms up fast because it is close to the manifold - so it takes care of the emissions before the actual cat gets up to operating temp. As far as i know - the warm up cats were a requirement only in california not anywhere else. So you can probably drill it out and use it as a straight pipe. For the other cat - you can get any generic $20 ones and have a exhaust shop weld it in there.
